LED leads

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

No I haven't, but, I wonder if you could use them to activate crossing lites, etc. I sent for some Photo Cells a while back & when I ordered them it didn't give the operating voltage & when I got them it was quite high, like 200 to 400 volts. I wonder what the operating voltage would be on these. Just curious.

What do you want to use them for? They are fairly sensitive, but are not the narrowest angle and they respond quite well to both IR and visible light.

Not wanting to use them, just looking for someone that does. I need some of the excess arms once they are trimmed to fit.

Exactly!! ;)

I design products, and in prototyping wind up with snippings of square leads. I also know of several other components that use square leads that are rigid, not easily bendable like the softer leads of LED's.

I could ask one of the companies I design for to save me the scrap cuttings but before doing that I would have to know what exactly you are needing. Is there a certain width, length, and how rigid can the leads be??

If you want something rigid and square and about .030 inches width, there are headers that come in a variety of lead lengths and shapes. I have some headers here that have square pins over 1 inch long.

The odds of finding someone using that particular phototransistor who would want to be bothered with this are slim to none, but I scrap coffee cans full of gold plated pins every 5 years. :-)

Look at Mouser Electronics header pins and see what they sell new.

Well, somebody has to use them, or else why would they make them? :D

They're quite large... Most crossing signal sensors use a tiny one that looks like a surface mount component.

can you post a link to SMD photo-transistors (not photo-couplers)? i would get some.
i can't seem to hit any ebay listings

Tom, nothing yet. Still looking for something about an inch long.

Make it easy on me. :-) Tell me what dimensions you need. Lead width (square) and lead length. I probably have headers here that are an inch long, if that is the length you need, or can find a source.

Here's a header that is three pin each pin 1 inch long::

It would be more cost effective to buy a 10 to 30 pin header probably if you need a lot of pins

Here's a 32 pin 1 inch tall for about $3.00 each....that's under 10 cents per pin.

You generally can push the pins out of the plastic guides without heating them.

I think I have some over an inch tall, but I have thousands of them 1/2 inch tall. :-)

Tom, here's what I'm trying to do. The last lead on this 4 pin connector gets inserted into one hole, then bent under the connector and soldered to the top of the motor.
