Latest C&D trash cars (PIC HEAVY)

Ignorance is Patriotic
Well, MRF Logistics, LLC has recently acquired some new C&D cars for construction and demolition debris service, hauling the debris out of New York City to a landfill in Ohio. Shown in the following pics are Thrall gons and Bathtub gons that have received a second life.

The cars required virtually every strategy in my weathering arsenal, and it was necessary for me to experiment with new techniques as well. Among the new features on these cars (compared to my previous cars) is the addition of an air hose, cutting the Kadee trip pin off, and weathering the coupler the same color as the trucks. I believe it makes for a very realistic end of the car, which can especially be appreciated in angle shots where the car is sitting by itself.

We will explore each of the ten cars individually. This is just the first batch of many, many more to come!

Fantastic work. What did you use to weather the couplers and not screw up the knuckle operation? I've been trying to find a reliable way to do that for years.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. As for the couplers, they were painted using *very thinned* washes of paint airbrushed onto the couplers. The wash was so thin that it took me perhaps up to 100 passes with the airbrush (using a hairdryer inbetween each coat to dry the wash) to get close to full coverage. The mechanics of the coupler and the spring won't gum up with paint washes. The secret is to make it super thin, perhaps 90 percent Windex to 10 percent PollyScale paint. Also, moving the knuckle on the coupler every now and then during the painting process will ensure it remains free to operate.

Wow, 100 passes for the couplers! Now that's what I call dedication. :) I sure wish that Kadee would just make them in rust color to begin with since every coupler is always rusty. I was looking at the pictures again. One question I have is about the safety stripes. They always cover the graffiti tags. Was that intentional?

Yes, that was very much intentional to cover the graffiti with the safety stripes. I wanted to represent the fact that the stripes were just recently added to the cars to comply with regulations, and are hence newer than the graffiti. Any graffiti that would be painted onto the stripes afterwards would wash right off because of the slick, glossy plastic coating on the prototype stripes.

Really? They're not stainless steel, they're just vinyl plastic. Its hard to believe, but at the same time I could not prove it wrong!

Simply amazing work! What brand of wheels/trucks are those and what technique did you use to weather? They all look amazing.
