Quick question, do the Johnstown coalporters ride on 33" wheels or 36" wheels? Reason i ask is i started replacing all 30 of the wheels on the coalporters i have and the 33" metal PROTO wheels look much smaller then the stock ones that came with them, which leads me to think they should be replaced with PROTO 36" metal wheels, am i right?

Can you get away with 33" wheels on these or would that not be prototypical and unusual?

Well, since the Johnstown coalporters were upgraded to carry 286 tons of of coal and the standard 100 ton coalporter has 36" wheels, it would be a good guess these should also have 36" wheels. From a modeling point of view, you can run them on 33" wheels forever and only a few coal hopper rivet counters will ever notice. :)

Thanks guys

I would like them to be 36" to be prototypical, but i just ordered 7 more 12 packs today LOL. On my next order, i might just get a ton of the 36"ers to replace the 33"ers im putting on now, but we will see lol

I do have 2 36" 12 packs sitting here, but ill use those REAL fast lol. Kinda sucks cuz i just ordered the 33" packs today and my order shipped out this afternoon, figures i was getting the wrong size wheels lol

Are you sure that a 4 axle car can cary 286 tons of coal, LOL? I think the cars were built to be 286K standards as in Lbs so 143 tons total weight. With the car weight factored in they can a carry around 110 tons of coal. But yes they do have 36" wheels

Oops, my mistake, my calculator had too many decimal points. :) It is indeed 286,000 pounds, 143 tons, and they carry between 110 and 120 tons of coal depending on the type. Apparently some of the cars have 38" wheels, just to confuse things further.
