My first attempt at installing this decoder was a failure. Everything was perfect except for the shell screw holes. This decoder wasn't designed with the cutouts.

The second attempt was a failure. I tried to install the pin connector and speaker in the open housing behind the cab. There wasn't enough vertical clearance to get the body down enough.

My third attempt will start after the OU/Missouri game.

The basic idea is to install the speaker in the opening behind the cab. The metal is cutout here to provide room for a detail piece that is seen through the grill. The decoder will sit where the factory DC decoder was installed. The problem right now is with the pin. The original decoder and pin were in the same location. The new decoder is taller and the pin connector won't fit. So, I'm going to rewire the unit with some longer wire to put the pin connector in the cab. We'll see how it goes.

Pics will follow later.

Once this is done Rock Island SD60M #5120 will be ready for sea trials!

Good luck, post some photos when it's done. Sounds like a "How to do it" thread to me :)

Cheers Willis

Soundtraxx

Hi Macjet I love Soundtraxx decoders because I think their the most reliable, but a decoder and speaker are hard to fit into engines not designed for sound. So I gave up on that method and just install the DSX version into dummy units. Their extremely loud and the DSX versions are only $65.00. The photo below show a soundtraxx DSX installed in a dummy RS-3 jumpered between to RS-4/5's.

You are right. There isn't a lot of room. The biggest problem was the 8 pin connector. I finally gave up on the convenience of this device and cut it off. I hardwired the decoder to the engine. The 0.8" speaker is fitting perfectly behind the cab. I also ground down the DC board mounting screws to provide more vertical clearance for the decoder. As soon as the liquid tape dries I'll finish putting it back together.

Pics will follow.
