How close can you work to the track

With limited space to work with, I was wondering just how close trackside businesses can be placed to the track.

I've seen some buildings as close as five feet to the track in some places. That works out to about 3/4's of an inch in HO.

I just showed my wife that clip and it freaked her out! "That can't be real! What if someone was deaf!" she said. I told her that all the awnings being folded in would be a good clue.
