HO scale tires, for junk pile

What's something that could make some good HO scale tires? Read somewhere....thinking it was a post on here, about somebody buying some rubber tubing and slicing it up making old tires. Tried to search for the post with no luck....read about it recently.

Hello NSconductor,
You mean something like these?
http://www.kralenstulpje.nl/a-19769...e-rubberen-gesloten-ringetjes-10-11mm-rekbaar
I added the website where it came from too because I don't know the english word for these kind of shops!here it is:

even smaller:
http://www.kralenstulpje.nl/a-19768...arte-rubberen-gesloten-ringetjes-7mm-rekbaar= 1/4 inch
They sell all kind of beads and other stuff to make for example necklaces.....

The rubber tubings are about smaller than 1/2 an inch

Black rubber bands from braces may work. I don't know where you'd find such a thing, maybe an online dental supply? I suppose they'd look more like inner tubes, it's just a thought.

Yeah those look more like inner tubes. The post I read, the guy bought some sort or tube or hose from a hardware store. Guess I could get an HO scale vehicle and take it in there to compare size to various hoses.

why not just buy a bag of tires from Aline?

Those look really good! But 24 at $5 could get a bit pricey if you wanted a serious pile. A piece of black rubber hose could be purchase for a couple bucks and produce hundreds of them. They wouldn't have tread, but that might be unwanted in a junk pile anyway.

Maybe mixing the Aline product with some 'filler' home-made tires would be effective enough.

Why not make a hill out of Foam, Paint it black, then glue a couple layers of tires on to it?

Yep, that would work.

I just found 1/2" black soaker hose. That would equate to about a 43" HO scale tire, and have a little bit of texture.

It's about $8 for 10 feet, which could be cut into nearly 600 18" wide HO scale tires. Though it might be better to cut them even narrower, producing another couple hundred tires.

If you're just making one or two little piles, building it up with filler then covering with good looking tires is an easy option. But if you're wanting visible tires spread around a somewhat larger area, and included int train loads, it might be nice to crank out a few hundred for cheap.

If I remember correctly it was a discussion around a photo in a WPF thread, and was within the last few months.

I've seen some rubber washers, that if glued together for thickness, might do the trick - like those in the end of a garden hose to provide a good seal.

The average car tire runs from 24 to 28 inches in diameter. Light truck tires as on a 4 wheel drive or pick up run around 27 to 33 inches diameter. A typical width falls from 6 to 8 inches across the sidewalls when mounted and inflated. Medium and heavy duty truck tires are obviously much bigger. Not far from here is a small power plant that shreds scrap tires into fuel pellets. They only sort the incoming carcases by whether or not they have steel belts because they require additional processsing before using as fuel. Otherwise their incoming tire scrap piles have a variety of sizes. Just something to keep in mind when building a 'prototypical' scrap tire pile, they're not all the same size.

Back to the original question, construct a large bin or fenced enclosure and use foam or other filler and then add enough tires to create the illusion of a large pile without exposing the filler.

Just to throw something else out there. If 1/2" is a bit large for tires why not look at 7/16" or 3/8" rubber vacum hose from an auto parts store. Not fuel line as that has white threads running thru it. They have different sizes down to 1/16" and up. Very very cheap, less than 1$ by the foot but again no tread patterns.
Just an idea from an old parts house guy :D
