High Speed Rail for Florida?

Heres a good one. Ohio is getting 400M for rail service from Cleveland to Columbus, Dayton and Cinncinatti. Average proposed speed is said to be 44MPH! Thats insane! Better yet the proposed schedule for a saturday OSU vs Mich is leave Cleveland at 6:00AM to get there in time for KO. The last train north is 3:00PM so you have to leave before the game is over. These politicians need a frontal labotamy. The governor (Strickland) (D) is running around yelling its a wonderfull day in Ohio. Get real stupid. We are all doomed. Five years ago I spent a month in Germany and road the trains. Now theres a train system. And its on time and you should see the ICE.
Frustrated in Medina, Ohio
Wayne

Wayne, Ohio is a great example of why this won't work. Until the late 30's, Ohio had the best interurban transit system in the nation. The Cincinnati & Lake Erie Railroad offered high speed transit service on its 217 mile route between Toledo and Cincinnati during most of the 30's. In 1935, the trip averaged four hours and 55 mph. The company introduced many far reaching ideas, like parking lots at all their stations, the first "Park and rides". All of this was done with no taxpayer money. Ultimately, the Depression, competition from taxpayer subsidized trucking companies, and the rise of the automobile killed off this great system in 1939.

Now we want to use taxpayer money to essentially rebuild these transit lines with the expectation they'll succeed in the 21st century? As the old saying goes, those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it...and spend a heck of a lot of money doing so. :)
