I thought I'd put up a few pics to show how the helix is shaping up.
I'm having a blast now that I can stage some pretty long @$$ trains for op sessions. Thanx to all for their earlier input, it was the boot in the butt I needed!
First pic shows how the cuts are made in the 7" wide strips of plywood by turning it over after every cut. Amazingly little waste out of a 4X8 sheet!
Pic two shows how I laminated the pieces one over the other to form the 5' circle. (glued und screwed)
Third pic is the first test train to run on the lower level... woo-hoo!
One thing to note is that I used a variety of types of wood for this, basically whatever I had laying out in the boxcar. Some of the wood is very hard and dificult to drive those tiny spikes into!
This is likely "old hat" to the veteran helix runners, hopefully it will help someone looking to start one.

Thanx guys!
Yes I have another three or four turns to go for the upper helix.
Worked out to be a 1.5% grade so a single six axle unit can haul 18 cars up hill with ease.
Average train will be about 24 cars, most with two units.
