about what year did grafitti on freight cars really start coming about? read an article where someone chose the early 1980's time frame because it was not common at that time.
It depends on what kind of graffiti you mean. Chalk mark sketches, slogans, etc have been on freight cars since the 1800s. Tagging with spray can art started in the 1980s, but didn't become ubiquitous until the late 1990s. Even late Conrail DVDs show freight cars that are pretty clean.
Hobos had there own system of markings for all kinds of information.
i was wondering more about the tagging, the big old spray painted billboards on the side of the cars. i remember reading where hobos would mark cars, to say i was here, or to leave messages for other hobos. thanks for the replies.
Graffiti became more popular on trains during the 90s. This was mainly a result of individuals not being able to graffiti the cta systems due to a crack down on graffiti. So if you model the early 90s to present, you should be ok having cars "tagged".
