about what year did grafitti on freight cars really start coming about? read an article where someone chose the early 1980's time frame because it was not common at that time.

It depends on what kind of graffiti you mean. Chalk mark sketches, slogans, etc have been on freight cars since the 1800s. Tagging with spray can art started in the 1980s, but didn't become ubiquitous until the late 1990s. Even late Conrail DVDs show freight cars that are pretty clean.

i was wondering more about the tagging, the big old spray painted billboards on the side of the cars. i remember reading where hobos would mark cars, to say i was here, or to leave messages for other hobos. thanks for the replies.
