Another railroad related story from the 1949 FUN FARE: A Treasury of Reader's Digest Wit and Humor.

A friend of mine was waiting for her train on the platform of a Maine railroad station. The station was reached by stairs from the street above, and beside the stairs was a chute used to slide baggage onto the platform below.

Suddenly, my friend was astounded to see, coming down the chute, a stout little old lady-- her legs stretched before her, her hat clutched in one hand, and her suitcase gripped in the other.

After a more or less dumpy landing on the platform, she gathered herself together, turned to my friend and said, "Land sakes! Wouldn't you think a big railroad station like this would have a better way to get down here?"
