i got a really nice running loco at the club today but it has some cosmetic issues their is a really big hole in the top where a beacon used to be and i was wondering how to fill it
thanks Dylan

Just an idea but what if you patch it with some styrene to simulate a repair job done by the railroad. Would be an interesting detail that you don't see too often.

I usually cut a square of .010" or .015" styrene and cement it on the back side of the hole to support the Squadron putty. Automotive filler type primer and wet sanding takes care of any pinholes or possible seams that might show up where the filler meets the body shell. It never fails that the putty to body seam only shows up after the last finish coat of paint without the primer / filler.

Styrene works well for filling holes in styrene. Is the hole small enough to fill it with a styrene rod?

Mike and Paul both have the right idea. The first is to see if the hole can be filled with a styrene rod that's the right size. If so, just stick it in, cut it flush, and sand. The repair will be undetectable. If the styrene rod idea won't work, glue some sheet styrene to the underside of the hole and then fill the remainder with putty. If you don't give the putty some support, it's going to sag no matter how many times you fill and sand.
