[FONT="]Hello all,
Was just wondering if anyone on the forum had any experience ordering items from modeltrainstuff.com and having them shipped to Canada.
Was there tax charged? How about Duty? What was the approximate shipping time? Who was the Canadian courier? Approximately how much is shipping.
The list price on their website is way better them my local and well below any Canadian online retailer I can find. Just wondering if I’ll lose all my savings when it crosses the border.
Thanks

There "should be" no duty on toy train items, but you will probably have to pay GST.
Do NOT accept delivery for internet purchases by a courier!!!!!! They will charge you a steep 'customs brokerage' fee at the door. Try about $40 for a locomotive over and above your price plus S&H. Most etailers' websites allow you to choose your method of delivery, so don't forget....ever..to check the correct box. Ask for delivery by USPS (US postal service).
Modeltrainstuff is a great place, one of the best. Use them myself, and virtually everyone gives them a hearty thumbs up. They are really M. B. Klein's store.
Hi Brad, welcome to the forums. There was a thread on this earlier:
http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24343
I put the correct import codes in that thread so if you are really paranoid you can ask the shipper to put the appropriate code onto the customs declaration.
Basically, there is no duty on model railroad stuff. You may or may not get dinged the GST or HST depending on which province you are in. UPS or other couriers will rip you off for their clearance charges as Crandell mentioned. USPS, depending on the size of the shipment will either arrive via Canada Post or if beyond the "small packet" size will come through Purolator. Either way its a crap shoot as to if the parcel gets stopped for GST. If so normally the charge from either of the above is $5.00 on top of the GST/HST charge. (or was last time I was in Canada)
Under $100 you wont have to pay anything at the door. Over that you will have to pay Tax.
I have order from them MANY times and all went well.
I had no problem, just the $5 "handling fee" they charge at the border, whether they actually touch the box or not.
As said above, do NOT go with a courier!
As stated in other replies; DO NOT USE a courier.
Thanks guys
Do you know by chance if DCC systems fall into the same import codes as listed in the linked thread?
Brad, answer is yes DCC equipment is regarded as an accessory for model trains and comes under 9503.00.90.2: Electric trains, including tracks, signals and other accessories therefor
excellent, thank you very much Andrew

The limit is not $100.00 - it's $20.00 (or $60.00 if marked as a gift)
Mark.
Plus the Customs handling fee Canada Post charges is now $8.50
