Wondering which way to go here. Currently I have one MRC 200 dc transformer and will be adding another to run another loco on my sidings. I don't know if it would make the wiring any simpler or not to just get a dual cab instead of another single. I think it would be more convient and more compact to use a dual. I am looking at the MRC Tech 4 280. I have some "store money" from one of the LHS's I frequent, and it would cost me less than another single cab, so I'm thinking maybe that's the way to go.
Personally, I think two separate power packs are better for fixed-in-place DC. That way, two operators can stand a little farther apart (ideally, with the control panel in between if you're going old-school)
I have one of these somewhere. Only thing I worried about was it was like having a VCR and DVD in one machine, if one goes bad your out two! Other than that, I agree w/ Byron.
2 throttles in one unit make for some crowded operation as has been said. Instaed of another complete power pack you might want to consider an add on hand held throttle that hooks up to your present pack. Less expensive than another full power pack and allows individual cab control like you are looking for. MRC makes one currently and the older MRC hand helds in the metal case show up a lot at the shows. Either way you will get a throttle knob and a directional switch in those units that can be your second cab.
I'd consider going for a full second power pack only if my present one was already close to maxed out on the ac and dc accessory terminal outputs.
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll look around for one of those hand helds. I don't know whats up with MRC as my LHS's are out of dual cabs and don't know when they will be getting more. At any rate, I can still get a single cab if I decide on that soon. My 2 LHS's have one left each.
