Does Atlas True Track need to be soldered?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Like any track that uses joiners Atlas True Track joiners also loosen over time. Soldering the joiners or soldering feeder or jumper wires to the rails are good ways of maintaining solid electrical contact. Soldering the joiners maintains electrical contact and gives a mechanical advantage. Many people don't solder the joiners at turnouts in case they have to replace them in the future. You can still solder jumper wires to the rails of the turnout.

If it's going to be a permanent, it wouldn't be a bad idea to at least solder every other, or alternating rail joiners. An alternative to soldering rail joiners is soldering a small gauge wire from track section to track section.

All of these suggestions are for any type of track, be it flex, sectional, Tru Track, EZ Track, etc. Poor electrical connection is the scourge of model railroading.

If you don't know how to solder, you'll need to learn. It's not that hard, and it's somethng you'll need to use quite often in model railroading.
