When it comes to your trains what do you have a company that you prefer to get your rolling stock and locomotives? Why one or another?

First, I am impatient when it comes to my trains, so I only purchase RTR. I am sure that Red Caboose, Inter Mountain, and Branchline, and I guess Accurail, too, are great kits that turn out fantastic rolling stock...if you build 'em...I don't. Hat's lifted to The Builders.

So, I have found myself buying only Walthers and Atlas, although I will undoubtedly tackle a couple or six Bowser Hopper kits before the year is out. I like the BLI H2a hoppers, but they are a bit pricey, so I will try Bowser.

I find the other brands, like Model Power, Roundhouse, and so on to require too much work out of the box. Call me a wimp, coddled, spoiled...they all apply to some extent. So...?

It might depend to some degree on your background with trains as well. For some reason I love the old Athearns that are noisy as heck and draw like 3 times the power to do the same job as, say, a new Proto 2000. Like the ones I played with as a kid. But I'm just an old school type of guy anyway. :)

Like Selector hit upon, it also depends on if you want RTR or kits. I don't mind either but kits are kinda fun to put together. :)

So far, Athearn. They've got the Dash 9's I need for BNSF, and the SD70M's I need for UP...

My top choices, ranked in order, are:

1. Atlas (Master Series)
2. Kato
3. Proto2000
...and, 2 years ago I never woulda thought it, but now:

4. Athearn RTR - their AC4400CW's made a believer out of me!

(I haven't bought any of their Genesis line yet, mostly because I already have models of my favorite locos of theirs, from P2K or Kato)

"Your mileage may vary"

When I was little I always thought Bachman was the best, but what did I know, I was just a kid. Not so...?

I like to build the Athearn kits but pretty much run on the "whatever" method.
If I like it, I buy it. I recently purchased a Model Power steam engine and I love it!! I was very surprised at how heavy it is and how well it runs.

Usually what ever is a good deal to me!:D
I like them all:D ....yea some are better than others but if it is UP and or a fallen flag under UP family tree or a demontrator or a lease unit or a run thru power..:p ...LOL......I will take it.... ;)

I like working on them too (kits) and I like the ready to run deals or custom made too. I still do not own a sound unit yet. :( As of today I am about 70% DCC on all my units I still have about 12 BB Athearns, 4 Atlas, 2 Model Pwr, 5 Proto 2000, 4 Proto 1000 and 1 Kato to DCC yet! Lots to do!

For locos I have atlas and Proto 2000 plus a few Spectrum 44 tonners. For rolling stock I like Railyard models, Tangent and Athabaska Scale Models for high quality and intermountain and accurail for good quality and price.

I really have no preference in what brand I buy. No single company can provide everything I or anyone wants. The only requirement I have is it has to fit what I want to do.

Right now, since you are just starting out, (or restarting) I like to say that you're like a "wino in a liquor store". You can't make a selection because it all looks so good!:D

I know I was there once!;)
