At Train Mountain, Oregon on Labor Day weekend, a beautiful UP 828 has split a switch. It was really interesting to see 1200 pounds of live steamer rerailed.
 
Okay, can I get some definitions here - I've heard both the term "split the switch" and "picking the switch points" (or similar).

What is actually occuring here?
