But I'm somewhat uhclear - why would one require a "de"railer?

Derails are used to prevent cars from accidentally rolling out onto the main line from yards and sidings. They are also used before swing bridges as a safety measure. Better to derail the train on the ground then have it run off the end of the track if the bridge is open :eek:
