Derails are used to prevent cars from accidentally rolling out onto the main line from yards and sidings. They are also used before swing bridges as a safety measure. Better to derail the train on the ground then have it run off the end of the track if the bridge is open

Almost every track manufacturer makes rerailer sections. http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/atl/atl519.htm shows an example made by Atlas.

Not like that. The ones you might see dangling on the bottom of caboose if the wheels go off. They place it under the wheel in hopes to guide it back onto the tracks. It looks almost identicle to the derails you see that go ontop of hte rails in some yards.

sweet, thanks for finding that. Now another part to order. I finally got in the moloco stuff i ordered thinking it was going to add the whole end section of a caboose. Not just the tool cabinets.
