hey guys, Just thought i would give all those steel mill modelers out there a heads up on a re-release of this popular book on Steel

Dean Freytag's Steel Book "The History, Making, and Modeling of Steel" will soon be available on a Limited Re-Run by the NMRA. Walthers will be getting their share of the books. They were last available back in late 1996 and sold out very shortly after. The re-run is set to come out on the 20th of this month, October

Ive been wanting this book ever since i got into the Steel Modeling about 2 years ago, and with my future plans with the Steel Mill layout, this book is a must lol

If anyone would like me to order them a copy along with my own personal one, please let me know via post in this thread or by PM.

I have been privileged to visit Dean's home layout a couple times about 10 years ago.
Even with selective compression, the basic steel mill model is HUGE. Dean has presented Davies Steel in a very detailed and accurate manner for such a large complex. There is simply no way to model the large (one to two mile long) steel mills in operation from the 1940's to the 1990's in the Cleveland area. Dean has an extensive background in steel mills and the rail operations around them.
Dean does a good job simplifying the basic parts of the steel mill and how to relate them to one another.
Dean used mostly PLASTRUCT materials so you can still get the various sizes and shapes needed to model a steel mill from scratch. You will need more than a 12" x 12" footprint to put your steel mill.

Yes, I am a fan of Dean Freytag, a fine gentleman and avid modeler.

Mikey, you are one lucky man to have met the master of Steel Modeling and seen his layout up close!

I go to Ashland University. Dean and his wife donated a large amount of money to our football program and therefore they own two golden seats in our stadium. An upstanding citizen of Ashland Ohio and a fantastic modeler...unfortunately he is in a rest home now, but is still sharp as a tack for his old age (87)...I was lucky enough to get invited to visit his layout...beautiful.....a true masterpiece!!!! You will not be disappointed if you buy this book!

Dean visited our club(Bucyrus,Model RR Club) late last year to look over our steel mill project and to offer some advice..He's quite a Gentleman.I first meet Dean in the 60s when he visited the Columbus Model Railroad club.

I WANT ONE!!! Please put me down for an order.

I will be starting construction on my extension room layout soon and will be modeling a small condensed steel mill (don't have room for a big one).

Oh and since we are ordering books, can you also order me a copy of The Model Railroader’s Guide to Steel Mills by Kalmbach?

Thanks!

While contest chairman of the SER back in the '80s and '90s, I had the honor and privilege of working with Dean on 3 national contests. Although I'm not a steel modeler, I do have his books. They have always been a great source of ideas and techniques.

If you don't have any of his books, this is a good way to get a copy of one.

Michael, Kellan, you guys have PM's :)

Reading your guys replies, it just re-insures me that Dean is a great guy and does nothing but give back to the hobby. 87 and still kicking and well is incredible, all the power to him :D
