I installed DCC in my Proto 2000 E8/9 and documented every step of the process. With my install, I was able to retain the original light control board for the MARS light.

I've done a bunch of the old E units and the PAs as well. Some had the 8 pin socket, and some didn't. I ripped out the old Proto board and stuck in a Digitrax DH-163, or equivalent NCE decoder, and replaced the bulbs. I was never nuts about that huge dual filament bulb Proto used on those early models anyway. The decoder's Mars or Gyra light function looks much better to me. Guess you can take your pick: trace the circuits, or do a little work up front mounting new bulbs.
