so when using DCC (which I am) you should always go with insulated frog turnouts?
That would be the easiest and safest thing to do to avoid any problems with short circuits, even momentary ones, can cause havoc in dcc.

That was my understanding. When you don't use isolated frogs, it can cause errors, especially in the case of inadvertent shorts.
