Now that golf is winding down here in the northeast I decided to start my upper deck city. The industrial section plan is complete but with out any detail yet. Main street is now in the planning stage. - Photo 1. One of the railroad crossing is positioned just before the soon to be Walther’s city station - Photo 2. The city station wood passenger train shed is almost complete. - Photo 3.
looking good George. I like how its turning out. Roadways look nice as well make sure to give us truckers with no power steering some room to swing around those tight spots!
At the club we have two water pipes that ended up in the middle of the layout. we turned one into a water tower and built a large building about the other. what ws your plan?
Also I like your station platform. is that the walthers kit? Last fall I air brushed about 12 scale feet of that platform and then went back and hand painted all the trimwork.. it was fun for the first half but then got old rel quick LOL so what did I paint next...I went and painted the clubs modern station with 20 scale feet of platform. and I dont run much passenger trains!!
That’s funny Trent. Well the first building gets a tie crossing so the trucks should be able to pull right out. The green column holds up the house. I have to live with it. The passenger shed is a Walther’s kit. I run a 16 car 20th Century Limited and a 4 car steam local. I needed the two tracks running into the station. The local makes the connection at the station.
George, good start. I like the Walthers road system, having used it myself, but I wish they had made the intersection corners wider as it does look pretty weird if you have a model semi trying to make a turn. The way you used the curved section with the brick building helps give the illusion of a bigger curve. You might consider the same thing by the passenger platform if it will work in that space. Just takes some cutting and piecing together of the sidewalk sections to make them follow the curve.
I like Trent's water tower suggestion. If you painted it white part way up and added a rubber ball, slit so it will go around the pipe, to the "top", it would be a pretty good representation of a modern water tank. Paint the rest of the pipe flat black to help disguise it. There are some good water tower photos at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_tower to give you some ideas.
Looks like a great start George!
I'm with Trent too, being an ex trucker I always notice curves and loading docks that would never allow a truck to turn, yours look just fine for the older rigs!
I have a pole sticking thru my layout as well, it will be a rock pillar sooner or later as it's no in town.
I hope you continue to post on this subject. I'm working on my city scene and am looking for ideas. It's always nice to see a work in progress instead of the finished product. It looks good so far.
I have seen poles made into smokestacks, but it doesn't look like you have room for any industry that would have a smokestack. You might be able to make room though. It'd be best painted red, and you could have it go pretty far up before it just gets ridiculous
