Today, I finally located a place that sells this stuff in Orange County. That's within a distance I'm willing to drive to get this stuff. They sell 2" thick 2X8' pieces for $1.70 a square foot. Unless my math is worse than I think it is, thats $27.20 a piece. I was thinking that would be reasonable for a 4X8 sheet. I would like to use this on my new layout bench which will probably take maybe 4 pcs. I haven't figured it down to the nth yet, but that could be over $100. Is this a reasonable price for this stuff, or a a little out of line? I would like to use it, but I'm not gonna get held up to do so. Thanks.

not sure what is different about the blue foam but i used pink one. got two 2" 4x8 sheets from as-is section in most ordinary home depot for 5$ each. the normal price of these is 20$

The only thing you can get in my area of So. Cal. at the Home Depot is white. I forget what it's called. I used it on my board before tearing it down. It is better than the styro bead board and it is a bear getting the foil covering off, otherwise I'd just go get more of that, and I may yet.

Do you have any building construction going on in your area? If so, almost everyone uses the pink or green for inside & outside wall insulation & you can get their scraps for free. I got enough from a const. site about 4 years ago to make 100 mountains in HO scale. Most large pieces were 2 & 3ft wide by 8ft long. I made a deal w/the contractor to remove all scrap everyday to get it free. I went everyday & hauled a pickup truck full for about 8 months. I sold all the excess that I didn't use to other model railroaders by running an ad in my local shopping guide. I sold about $500.00 worth in 6 months.
Pink: Owens-Corning made it
Blue: Dow made it
$27 per sheet is a little more expensive than I paid here in Texas, but then again, many things in California are more expensive than the rest of the country. I think I paid $18 for a 4'x8'x1" sheet and $22 for a 4'x8'x2" sheet. The product was called Dow Square Edge, and Dow Scoreboard is comparable.
Lowe's of Mission Valley in San Diego has the same stuff, only its under $10 per 2'x8'x1". I dont remember the exact price on the stuff.... $27 is a ridiculous price for that stuff
And Larry, to answer your question about the construction and such around here, they use the white bead board, rolled insulation or blown insulation here in CA. No pink or Blue, and if they do, its rare to find at any construction site around here....
I worked at Lowes here in Rancho Santa Margarita, which is in Orange County. I worked in the Lumber/Building Materials department and i tried for almost a year to locate Blue or Pink foam. All i ever came up with for blue foam was the Lowes in Mission Valley, quite a drive.... But no building materials places anywhere around here carry blue or pink, just the crappy white bead board....
Josh, it's odd that California builders aren't using more styrofoam for homes. It's very common here and our climate is a little hotter here is summer and, most of the time, not much colder in the winter. If the present cap and trade bill passes the Senate, look for lots more of that pink and blue stuff because it will be all but impossible to attain the 30% energy efficiency increase the bill calls for without it.
