I have used the Axian storage containers. They have foam inserts to hold cars, and you can safely store or carry about30-40 per box.

I use a Plano 8606 tackle box. The bottom will hold about 50 of the standard jewel cases. The rolling stock and locos that didn’t come with case fit in the trays above. I’ve wrapped them with plain paper towels to keep them from moving around.
