The warbonnet F's of the Santa Fe have to be the classic paint scheme of the diesel era. The Santa Fe Bicentennial scheme was also the best of that lot. My all time favorite for classy schemes is the Southern's tuxedo scheme. The worst ever was Penn Central - Yuk!

C&NW green & yellow
RI red & black
D&H blue and silver (alco PAs)
Southerns Green & white
NYC 2 tone grey (passenger)

I'd have to go with the Santa Fe warbonnets and the Burlington Northern Executive schemes. (just a little biased there)

I forgot to add the Great Northern and Northern Pacific passenger train schemes of the 50's. Those Rio Grande F's didn't look bad either. :)

Wabash F and E units.

Monon cream and crimson F3's crossing the flatlands of northern Indiana. Being a native Hoosier, I love the Monon, but the ATSF with its Warbonnet diesels is a close second for me.

You've got to love the Monon just for being about the last Class 1 railroad to run unmodified F-3's and heavyweight passenger cars into the late 60's.

Yeah, I'd like to see a whole bunch of those too but I'll bet it's one of the most expensive paint schemes ever put on a prototype locomotive.

Them Rio Grandes are quite striking, to bad all these lines got lumped into the big 4 class 1's we have now. While I love modern railfanning, I cant stand railfanning the class 1's anymore, its the same old power on every train, usualy high HP GE's with a few EMD's mixed in. I would rather railfan the regionals or shortlines, more interesting power, most times the crews and managment are a bit kinder to railfans as well. Cheers Mike
