Me again. Couple of photos of river sand for ballast.
1st up a piece of track with raw sand and 4 coloured and sifted examples.
Then the paint used - Various mixtures of White/Black for 3 Greys, Burnt Sienna only for the "Iron Ore" (it isn't as red in real life).
Sand is coloured first (raw paint and little bit of water, with a drop of detergent), just enough to mix properly, then allowed to dry, then sifted.
