If it's excessively noisy you might need to de-bur the gears with a file or "pearl drop" tooth goo.
They will quiet down with a very little bit of lube and breakin time in both directions as mentioned.
 
Pop the shell and check the motor mounts, the U joints, and the clips holding the trucks to the frames. Sometimes things can get jarred loose in shipping. I can remember one BB loco I bought had tthe motor halfway out of the mounts & it sounded like a scrap heap. Re-seated the mounts & problem went away. Also run it with the shell off. You should be able to isolate the noise. Sometimes wires are loose and rub against the flywheels or driveshafts. Makes a heck of a racket. The pearl drops thing is a great trick but the kind of noise you're describing is probably the result of something being out of place.
