Are alla the athearn genesis units DCC ready? Reason I ask there is a local shop that has a few of the genies for $90 each. I may pick up the NYSW line when i get my dam tax refund. But i want to know if i'll just need a plug in decoder or a whole wire in decoder.

Yes, and no. They're all convertible.

Genesis units have always been simple, just change the power board to a decoder, and add resistors to the lights, or swap the lights to 12v. Newer Genesis come with a quick plug.

As Josh said, they are all DCC ready. It is very easy to replace the Athearn board with a decoder board. TCS even has a decoder with built in resistors so you don't have to change the bulbs.

$90 for a RTR Genesis is a good price, but if it is really old stock that you have to put all the details on yourself, not such a great deal.

yea the nysw one has just the handrails applied. the ditch lights and other details all need to be installed.

Odd. Mine have either been install all details, including handrails, or install none. Might be an older one, and the previous owner installed the handrails. The NYS&W came out in '03, I have none from that run so I cannot speak for them.
