Hi There, my name is Dave I live in Australia, 64 years of age, have been a railroad nut since about age 5, have built a few layouts over the years but due to family obligations never got very far with them.

Now the family is off my hands I have the time and energy to have another go at this wonderful hobby, thought I would jump in and show a few pics of the layout, its a bit of a mixed bag but by golly am I having fun building it.

Boulder Valley is a freelance layout a total figment of my immagination, the Valley is serviced by the ficticious "Eureka Sequoia Railroad" and the "Union Pacific", the era is sometime in the 1960s, as this is freelance layout I decided to run steam and diesel together, maybe a bit late but I dont mind.

All steam locos are MicroAce Japanese outline, as many Japanese locos were purchased from the USA including the Baldwin 0-6-6-0 articulateds they fit into my system, I have Americanized other steam locos as much as possible, many of the locos pictured here have now been painted into ESR livery.

I have built more scenery since these photos were taken and also want to get my buildings into place befer planting the 300+ trees that I have waiting, the switch motors will all be covered up with scenery/buildings.

Layout is 13ft 6in x 2ft 9in, enclosed in a backyard shed which is fully insulated, track is Peco code 80.

Welcome aboard. That's a nice, neat looking layout and control panel. Is it N or HO? Is that an airport I see in the background in the first picture? Who made those UP passenger cars?

Sorry forgot to mention it is N scale, the area at the back is a proposed Pioneer Town and sawmill, there have been some changes to that area, there is now a small mountain with tunnel and cuttings.

The UP passanger cars are repainted Japanese type made by Kato, I originaly had intended to model a Japanese type layout but changed my mind early on, I kept some of the locos and rolling stock because they run beatifully and felt they could be modified to fit into my new layout.

Ah, OK, it's amazing how much that looks like some taxiways and a runway from a distance. I'll be interested to see what it turned out like.

I thought they looked a little different but they still look close enough to American prototypes to not just discard them. Looks like you did a nice job on the paint and decals - I'm assuming they weren't UP when they were the Japanese prototype. :)

The Japanese seem to have developed a strange combination of US and British practices. Many of the photos I've seen of Japanese locomotives and rolling stock had an American look, even before the war. OTOH, they chose to drive on the left side of the road. Odd combination of adapting to foreign cultures.

Hi Jim, none more than this beautiful 0-6-6-0 Baldwin, hard to believe these made it to Japan, I have two of these models made by MicroAce, fantastic runners, not much to do to these to make them look American.

Hi Dave,
Another David saying welcome, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here!

I'm also in early steam around the 1900 to 1920, right now I'm in the process of expanding an HO layout I started some years back as well as switching over to DCC too.

Looks like you have your layout fairly well under way!

See you around here then,

David

Welcome, Dave. It really is fun and exciting to have something as grand as that come together. Looks like you are enjoying yourself.

Nice layout.
