Adding DCC Decoder to Mantua Master Loco?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I haven't done one, but a couple of comments;

- It looks like there should be plenty of room to get a decoder in there. I guess there's no plug as it would have been mentioned (?) Can you drive a soldering iron?
- I suspect the smoke generator is a "sealed unit" so should continue as before - Nothing to do with the decoder [Unless anyone knows different?]

Good luck,
Cheers,
Ian

The smoke generator should be hooked up to the track leads so you should be all set. If you want the ability to turn it on and off, you can hook it up to a function on your decoder, but you may want to hook it up to two functions to avoid blowing the function driver. (hook positive to blue wire, negative to green AND purple wire)

Would the MC4 be a good choice for this application?

Firstly, my apologies for asking if you can solder! I'm assuming you mean the TCS decoder for turning the smoke on & off?

The answer depends on the current drawn by the generator - Even tying two functions together as suggested it seems you're only going to get ~200mA [The spec sheet says the function outputs are 100mA] - I dunno if that's enough?

FYI, I just looked at a Digitrax DZ143 (their smallest 4 function) and it claims to be capable of 500mA per function.

diburning - It hadn't occured to me that tying functions together like that would increase current capability. Certainly makes sense - Thanks for that!

Cheers,
Ian
