This thing looks amazing! (except for the price tag)

+1

You do know you can set JMRI up as a similar "server" and use iPad, iPhone & even Android devices as throttles etc.....

My main "concern" with it; Aren't the Europeans kind of "ignoring" the NMRA DCC standards? - I noticed he said "dcc or Motorola" - I think ESU (and others?) have gone beyond what the NMRA is specifying and aren't sure how well it will "play with others"? [Which may not be a concern of course....]

Very cool piece of kit though - Good find!

Cheers,
Ian

Love the display and features but I'd prob miss what was happening on the layout..LOL...too busy looking at the screen!
That is a nice find!

ecos is a nice system it seems. last year i brought this up we got some flaming discussion (although i must admit i presented the topic in a very flamboyant way  ). in any case the price tag is steep. one could purchase a zephyr/powercab, laptop and traincontroller software for that much and have much better functionality . so this is really a niche product for those willing to shell a extra in order to have one piece device.

Ian, this is compatible with DCC.

Ian, this is compatible with DCC.

Indeed - My apologies if I gave any other impression.

However, my point is if running DCC, are you getting the most from it? I certainly don't know the answer, but his mention of "DCC or Motorola" implies there may be more to it......

Having said that, I concur - Digitrax (or NCE ;)) + JMRI can do it all!

Cheers,
Ian

Basically this system runs DCC but is compatible with some of the other systems in Europe. Since ESU is a German company (and actually caters more to the European market) they don't want to shut their main market out (ESU makes very nice DCC decoders such as the Lokpilot. LokSound is also made by this company. It is the best user-customizable DCC sound decoder out there. With a computer and their interface equipment, you can upload your own custom sound files)

...
It can use an iPod Touch, iPhone, or an iPad as a wireless throttle. (If I am not mistaken, this thing also pumps out a network wifi signal)

As it currently stands, you still have to have a PC running JMRI and a wireless router to use an iPod/iPhone/iPad/Android throttle(which you can do with a lowly Zephyr or Power Cab), this functionality is not built in to the ECoS, at least not according to the manual. Also, it does not have wifi.

Ah, I thought he said that you could use it (straight) with the ECoS in the video, but I guess I misheard him.

When Anton brought this up last year, I spent alot of time reading the propaganda, (ie, literature), that was on the website.

At that time I got the impression that All of the hardware, not the decoders, but the hardware was compatible only with its own or Maerklin's equipment, similar to the current case here.

I also got the impression that the prices of some of this additional equipment was going to be equal to, if not more expensive than the base.

Too much for me.
