OK so i got a few decoders here an I have some questions.

First off is this decoder that was installed in a walthers engine that i got.

All wires are hooked up except the orange wire, where does it go? Also any idea as to what brand of decoder it might be? I see the #471 on it

Next is this decoder w/ sound What brand? it does have a controller and it says athearn on it, And im wanting to put it in one of my athearn bluebox units or a RTR unit, so how do i wire it up? There is a lone red wire that im guessing is power but how do i ground it?

Also i have an athearn RTR ac4400 that is DCC quick plug equipped what decoders can i use in it?

thanks Mike

The first one looks like an NCE unit. Look at their web page and see if you can match it up. The orange lead is motor positive. Look for a solder bump like the rest of the wires are soldered to. That's probably where it goes

Next one is an MRC sound unit. Rail pickup is at each corner of the board. the four inboard tabs are for llights, and the two side tabs are motor leads. You can get an instruction sheet from Athearn if you know what model it came out of.

Quick Plugs will take Digitrax DH series, NCE, or any brand that uses the 9 pin plug. Hope this helps.

First one looks like a Lenz decoder. A cheapo basic lenz decoder with one function output (which means no directional lighting. I had one of those before).

Second one is a MRC decoder (junk)

I'd be concerned that the 1st decoder may be shot anyway. And looking where the solder points are, I would also suspect its a Lenz.
Seeing wires that are twisted together, (not soldered?) and without insulation would make me highly suspect of that unit.
Murphy's law of electrical shorts being what it is and all!

Shrink tubing is cheap if you buy it by the roll!!!

THANKS everyone.

kbkchooch, i think it is fried actually, got it all back together and nothing.

I did get a manual from athearn today for there decoder, although it shows no pictures of the decoder or anything, just says how to run it.

WOW thats sweet. Works for me.

Problem with forum,,,,,,,,,I got your next question via email update, but it didn't appear here to quote.:(

Anywho, Yes you can send them anyones decoder. I've sent in TCS and Digitrash units to them many times before, and gotten brand new comparable NCE units in exchange. Sweeeeeeet deal!!
