Hey guys, first post here and I'm anxious to learn more about this somewhat confusing hobby! I'd also like to share my first layout that I've started building.
It actually fits on 4x5, even though I have 4x6 benchwork built, but eventually I'd like to add on to both sides where the 4 "dead...
First off, let me say that though I have been a Model Railroader for many years I have never had to plan a layout. I have belonged to various clubs depending on my place of residence, and I have worked on layouts, but I have never had to trackplan one.
So I am looking for some help and...

I'm about 1/2 way through my first "practice" layout (1'x6'). I'm sticking with modular / shelf type layouts until I can take over the basement (wife says 8 more years :) ... Plus I like the concept of building small sections that are detachable and portable in case I move. I've done much...

Hello All, this looks like a good place to play.
I am in the planning stages and have a question about turnouts.

Or would different turnout #s be used in a yard vs. a...
I'm in the process of laying down cork strips for my roadbed. Does anyone have a simple technique/trick that allows for clean/crisp fit of cork roadbed under turnouts. I find I'm either losing the bevel or having to guess where to cut. Many thanks in advance. Eric
A freelanced HO layout under construction. The Carson Valley Line was bought up by Santa Fe RR in 1963 and now in 1965 it is operating with equipment from both railroads, steam and diesel. Both the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific have trackage rights into Carson City station.

I live in Utah and I was so excited when we started to get trains here. We now have LR transit and commuter rail. I would like to start a layout of my city. I have done a lot of thinking and looking into how to build custom models of the buildings in the city. The problem I am running into is...

First of all, thanks for all the advice regarding my first attempt that, in retrospect, missed the mark completely. I feel that I have learned much since then.
This layout features a large yard and yard lead that are completely off the mainline. I exchanged the roundhouse for a 2-stall...
