Hey everybody!
Sort of having a problem with my layout. I am using the woodland scenics realistic water. In the beginning it came out great. I followed the directions (step by step).Looked awesome. Now that the water has been in place for about a month or more (6 weeks). The damn thing is starting to shrink! All my finishing touches are ruined because of this. Anybody have any answers or problems with this crap?!

Thanks

Your dream layout will be completed if you stay single

How thick did you pour the Realistic Water? You shouldn't pour any one lift more than 1/8" thick and it should dry for at least 24 hours before your pour the next lift. I've read of other people with your problem and it was always because the product was poured on too thick and then shrank when it finally air dried. Some people have reported seccess by pouring more product around the edges in thin coats, waiting 24 hours between each coat, until the water surface is even. Other people just extend the shoreline down to the shrunken sections with some ballast and ground foam to cover the pulled away edge.

hey Jim,

some pours were heavier then 1/8 no more then a 1/4. I did not think it would shrink that much. I waited for 48 hours or more for the next pour. not sure if the plaster on the bottom absorb any of it? I'll do my best to fix this, but I need too (maybe) rip the rocks out. argghhh. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for getting back too me

Sorry about the grief but this stuff is really sensitive to being poured on too thick. Assuming you painted the plaster bottom to seal it, that shouldn't have been a problem. The bottom line for me is I don't like WS Realistic Water. It's just too finicky to work with and way too expensive. I like Envirotex. It gives the same results for way less money and it never shrinks no matter how thick it's poured.

I go along with Jim. Envirotex is much better in there is no shrinking and it doesn't try to creep up the sides. I poured mine in about 1/8-1/4 thick applications. You can paint/tint in between levels to give added effects and dry time is about 24 hours. You can get a paste version and dabble it on the surface of the other for wave/white cap effects. All dries very clear. Any Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or arts/crafts store will have it.

Sorry for the slight blurr.:o

What is the cost of Envirotex? And can I pour this over the woodland scenics water? Or do I need too rip it out? Thanks for all the feedbacks

You can get Enviorotex for about $5 a pint at WalMart. I've never used it over the WS product but I'd give it a try and see what happens. Worst come to worse, you can rip it out anway. If it works, then we'll all learning something new at your expense. :)

Hi Plasticman: I, too used WS Realistic Water for two of my streams. They looked ok for a while, but they never really hardened. They also developed unrealistic "bumps". Both pours were 1/8" or less at a time. For my third stream, I used Magic Water. I think it turned out great. The surface is hard and shiny. It's a 2 part resin. I poured it in 1/4" layers, with no problem. I, then went back and poured it over the WS streams, with excellent results. I did use WS Water Effects on all 3 streams, with good results.

Hi groovydudeyo: Thanks, they are actually 3 different streams. The 3rd one was the last one I did. I used Magic Water for the water part. Here's an in process pic of the basic foundation for the stream. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Grampy, it looks like Trout Unlimited needs to get out there and remove some of the snags from the last flash flood! ;)

Hi gd: I used nails, then, after ballasting(bonded ballast with diluted white glue) I pulled the nails and filled them with Squadron Green putty. Rotor: No, No, we like snags like that, that's where the big browns like to hide.
