What type of rock?

With a little careful work a shale cliff can be created simply by working a piece of blue foam board with a serrated knife and a wire brush. Below is an example of such that is on my layout.

That is really nice. It really looks layered.

Check out these layers; they're almost vertical. This is also in the area in which I want to model.
 
2x8 sheets, if the rock pictures are from near your home, they are at the home depot just up the way.

I live over 5200 kilometres from those rocks.But I will check out my local home depot tomorrow.

You probably know where this is also.
 
Try thin sheets of cork board stacked on top of eachother. That will give you layers. You can alternate between think and thin boards too for a varied look. obviously a thin coat of plaster then paint will make it look like rock.
