Weekly Photo Fun 7/17-7/23

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

DJ, thanks for the tip on the BMLA fence. It looks nice on your layout.

Ray, the stop signs and telephone junction box look good. It's little details that help bring a scene to life.

Mike, good job on the DPM building. Their not hard to build be the detailig is a real bear. I wish both DPM aned Walthers made opening freight doors on their structures so yo could do some insdide detailing without havng to cut out the door.

Trent, that is some old trackage there. You don't often see mushroom rail joints like that now. Must be operating on some kind of FRA waiver. I'd sure hate to be the engineer behind the controls of steam engine on that line.

Jeffrey, nice brickwork on that fire station. Every time I see yours, I think I need to do something to mine to improve it but then get sidetracked on other projects.

Crandell, nice scene set-up. I never think about the problems of changing out things like bad trucks on the real railroads.

Chris: I find that it is better to pre-stain the wood, that way any glue that works it way to the surface at joints does not interfere with the staining. But nice looking E-50/60 rating bents.

New bridge is installed! Sorry about the blurry photo, I was re-testing my phone, think its about time to replace it.

Need to buy some Hydrocal and start casting in the barriers for the road underneath, and cast in the abutments above...

Another week of beautiful work - you all are sure raising the bar.
Thanks for posting -

Finished the LifeLike Coaling Tower. Old 43 dropping off a coach at the CarShop (scratch built from April Scale Rails article).

Jon: Very nice job weathering the coaling tower, had to take a close look as I first thought it was the old Alexander Scale Models wood kit.

Chris, that's a lot of bents for not even being done. :) I do like Matt and stain all the wood first so the glue doesn't interfere with the stain. Probably not big deal on a trestle but something to remember for other wood kits.

Josh, the photo quality doesn't look bad to me - at least compared to some of the junk I post. :D Nice looking bridge. Ya' gonna put a railroad name on the side of the girder bridge?

I got to make 15 bents! as for stain the wood first......I tried it and no glue sticks to the wood:confused: I tried super glue and wood glue:confused: so far nothing works...Either way I'm being very careful not to get glue all over so the glue won't stand out when I stain after it's build....As as tiny as things are I don't think any staining error will show up as badly as with larger scales:);) The bridge is a fun build:D

Chris: what are you using for stain, I have never had a problem with gluing wood after staining with and alcohol mixture.

I dunno yet, its supposed to be a new bridge, I think I might leave it plain.

I love that 3 tier layout! Here's an oldie, but a goodie.

Couple of current pieces. First three shots are of an O scale ice house, this started out as the Berkshire Valley kit but the platform is being modified with a roof and different drop doors. Platform is 32" long. Last shot is the base of a HO scale warehouse.

minwax? i know i'm doing some thing wrong but, ya the oil based wax has a tendancy to not let the glue soak in to the wood:confused: creating a weak bond! Either way since I started this way I'm going to finish the bridge this way. my next project a wood road bridge to hide one of the back drop enterences I'll try staining first.....

Chris: Minwax would be a problem, for years I have used a bit of acrylic Model Master "Aircraft Interior Black" with 70 percent alcohol. The water based paint does not interfere with the bonding of any glue.

As for building in N scale, never have had a client request for anything in that scale.

Thanks fer the info!!!!:D I'll try it:)

OBTW: Air brush, brush, or spong it on? I applied the minwax with a brush. It seemed worked fine....

CSX Z102 with FEC 100 and FEC 103 glide past Downtown Tampa, with running meets in regularity and other cool trains. Note the kid in the FEC shirt with them M-2s on there, I kinda wish I had that shirt. Neat moving photo effects included as well.
