Mixed freight top view. A view you don't get to see that often for weathering information.

Well you sure helped end my day on a good note. Excellent video with like you mentioned great top views. 1st remarks is WOW, not a lot of graffiti. 2nd was the rebar loads in the gondolas. Loved the small bulkhead ends on those cars, the left over scrap in a few of the “empty“ gondolas.

This is truly a helpful video for someone who likes to weather, create loads and run trains. Thanks Tom for sharing this with us

Thanks, my two favorites were the rebar in the gons and seeing the deck on the small bulkhead cars. I always wonder what's in a gondola especially when you see 3-4 in a row.

Totally agree. I have now watched it 3 times taking notes the third time. Yes, I know, I need a life but I enjoy this stuff
I came across this guy the one day doing some railfanning on youtube. I like that he was on a bridge and you could see the tops and sides of the car and what was in the open top cars. I also noticed that the radiator fan exhaust is so hot from these tier 4 engines that it burns the paint off and that they are a gray/whitish color and some have rust around the edges. I'll have to go back and redo some weathering on my engines, after all most people see the tops and sides when viewing a train on a layout. It is also helpful seeing the top deck of a flatcar to get an idea how the wood weathers, not something you see all the time.

But, but….!!!! (stammers)

The first whole tanker seen on the siding is glossy and even (gasp) new-looking!!!!! A couple on the moving train were, too!

“THAT’S NOT LIKE THE PROTOTYPE!!!!”

Somebody better call CSX and tell them to stop this heretical $@/%*##!!!!!
I did a unit train of ethanol tanks cars for a client. 24 cars and he sent me pictures on how he’d like them done. Basically all 24 the same level of grime. I sent him a video from YouTube showing a train of 100+ tank cars. There were 5 cars in that train that if they weren’t freshly repainted were 1 or 2 weeks old. Of the 24 cars I did for him all I did on 1 car was reduce the glossy finish. The rest got various degrees of weathering. The video Cambria Area52 posted also shows the lack of graffiti on the train. Not all trains, (exception maybe be the LA area) are wall to wall graffiti

They all start out shiny at one point and go downhill from there.
Tank cars also drain downhill, so they get stickier and oilier earlier than other types of cars. So much so that I'll have to wash my hands just thinking about it.

Gonna need...acetone, turpentine...that orange peel based sticky label remover...and, of course "Dawn" dish-washing detergent. :p

Going over this video I have some gondolas that need loads. I seen the rod loads and have leftover tag wire. So I'll give it a try. Still having some trouble matching metal color paint. Here is the task at hand and the model.

I particularly applaud the 1000 vs 100 pieces buying expertise. Why not get it tenfold?

Patting myself on the back here. I just happened to be there on Amazon to buy the last one or two boxes--20 lbs each--of various colors of 20 lb bond paper. Normally sold in 100 sheet bundles, I managed to snag an entire box--2000 sheets IIRC--of that same paper for about $20 a box. Perhaps five of the six colors I want/need for shredding over the years to make thousands of micro-leaf versions of a veritable legion of trees. Colorado "Quaking Aspen" in particular.

So I now own about 120 lbs of thin bond paper. Total cost...$120. Retail cost about $2,400. Yeah, it pays to shop.

Snowman! Do you have pictures of your “quaking aspen”? I have since April been trying create a grove of them as a gift for a fellow modeler with little in my eye of success.
thanks

While I normally sell my weathered rolling stock via my client list or on FB I have recently tried EBay. I always resisted EBay but the FB sales are way down, so I thought I’d try it. I have sold a few things in the last couple months. If I could average 1 sale a week that would be nice

The current model up on Ebay is a Walthers brand Sulfur car. While more expensive on the minimun bid price then what I would do on FB, the increase covers the EBay costs.

The car weathering followed my typical methods:

Clean with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol

Spray a flat clear finish (here I used VMS)

multiple brushed on Vallejo Air paints thinned to create a wash

the sulfur spill on the car is Americana yellow from Michael’s

Clear coat again and take pictures

A gorgeous morning so far in WIsconsin. Heading to a dealer to feed my train addiction (Hiawatha Hobbies), lunch out and meander home via the back roads

enjoy the day

Hello! Centerbeams by Atlas, 1 of 3 inprocess

I live in So. Central WIsconsin where we are having a weather event. The best place to stay out of the heat is my bench. It’s not nice outside
IMG_1074.png

the Centerbeam was just something to start the afternoon off. The morning was a couple locomotives that we will talk about elsewhere, but this is the Rolling Stock thread

Basically using Panzer Ace as a wash
IMG_1075.jpeg

thinning with water. After the break the floor is next

Plus there is 1 Athearn RTR bulk head

Hand cleaned with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (my 99% is precious right now)

The deck is Tamiya Black Panel liner brushed on and allowed to dry. 3 times! After the final drying, I applied Pan Pastels #820.02 Neutral Gray extra dark. Then hit it with the airbrush and VMS matte clear varnish

After it comes out of the dehydrator (used to harden the Arcylics quicker) I will be playing with the side sill/frame next

Test fitting the load!

Spent way too much time on this Center beam from Atlas. WPRR #73068 is done except for wheels

There are times I keep going back when I should consider a car done. This was one of those times and cars. Thought it looked good, then redid the deck and it was too dark, it’s ok right now! It’s drying after it’s final clear coat

The plan was for this to be a layout car for me
