Weathering Engines a Continuous thread.

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Although you'd get a lot of exhaust soot adhering to the grill, weather would also play a part in washing some parts of the grill which would allow the underlying colour to come through, so perhaps a lighter grime around those areas would be appropriate.
You meet hit the grills with the light grime coat?

If you look at post #18 those GE units move a lot of air through those screens, so much so the exhaust gets drawn in. I've seen pics of the top of the radiator where it is white due to the heat burning the paint off.
I didn’t realize it was post #18 of yours I was looking at. That picture is what made me realize I am not happy with the grills I have done

Needs more paint, definitely

I am so glad I decided to take the following pictures before I put this bad boy in its box to be shipped out

There is a broken front step…

I will be so happy when the client receives this and his weathered freight cars. I am except for packaging this up on Saturday, out of the weathering business till Tuesday, 4/4/2023.

I had a surprise show up before midnight on 4/13. I was told to expect a package as a client just ordered a diesel and was having it shipped to me from Washington.

Athearn Genesis SD70M UP4944. It showed up this morning at 9:45 UPS. Less then 18 hours for $15.00, not bad

The windows were taped over. The clear coat was applied and dried for 3 hours.

The grills are being darken with a mix of Vallejo Air #71.057 Black (3 drops) and #71.036 Mahogany (5 drops) and clear tap water (3 drops). Brushed on with #0 brush. Dried with help from hair dryer. Once dried the grills have a ting of rusty brown along with the black. Some touch up but much better then doing the grills on the last BNSF unit.

Here are some pictures of the prototype that again are used for inspiration not an exact copy. Photos are credited to the photographers on the picture frame

On April 13th I received an unexpected diesel. UP 4944 sd70m. A nice machine.

I did clear coat it in April but there were many things in front of it and after discussions with its owner, he was fine and was hoping to get it in June sometime. He will. I have played with this guy on and mostly off in May. But this week I had some night time available by multitasking. Instead of just watching the NHL playoffs in my cave, I watched the hockey on the IPadPro in the train room.

Some pictures of a work in process (WIP)

The body grime is a mix of Vallejo Air paints: 2 drops of dark dirt, 1 drop of dark gray and 2 drops of rust. Thinned with 25 drops of tap water shaken to mix and then and hand brushed on. For me this was enough to do one side and both end panels. For the body before the FIRST coat of weathering grime was brushed on I brush on clear tap water in the area to be weathered. About 3 brushes wide is what I wet. Then brush the wash on. Then move down the body. Do this until the color fits the eye. I also varied the panels. Not all had the same amount of applications.

truck frames are hand brushed with Vallejo Air burnt umber 3 drops to water 30 drops or 1-10 ratio. That‘s enough to do 1 truck and the 1st coat of the fuel tank. It wasn’t rusty enough for the client so I did a 2 drops burnt umber to 4 drops water and touched it up. He’s happier now. I will run some black Tamiya panel liner into the seams and crevices.

The roof is Vallejo air black 1 drop to 25 drops water. Black goes a longggggg way. So it’s better to do light coats and just keep building it up. I did maybe 6 applications using a hair dryer between applications till it looked good to me. After the client viewed it I added 4 more applications and again the client is peachy with it

The fans on the roof were done with Mission models grimy black, 1 drop thinned with 2 drops of water.
The radiator grills are Vallejo Air 2 drops Mahogany and 1 drop Vallejo flat Black thinned with 9 drops of water.

I still have to work on the front plow, the fuel tank and the rear end. There needs to be on front plow some rust spots per the prototype picture being used as the inspiration for this unit. Those left side splotches will be removed on the plow

My kind of weathering love it

Next up after 6 weeks of traveling and doing anything else but trains, I have returned.

UP 9807 is a Athearn RTR HO scale Locomotive that has added DCC, sound and ditchlights.

Using a prototype picture I noticed the red sill stripe on the model is yellow on the real thing, there is no front plow and a couple other nitpicky things. The client has decided not to worry about the red sill stripe and I can find a plow and windshield wipers, so all is ok.
IMG_0494.jpeg

The photo was found online at RRpictureArchives.net, and taken by Bob Keenan in 2017.

As usual the picture is for inspiration and I am trying to capture the essence of the real thing, not duplicate it.

Cleaning was done by swiping the entire unit with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol with a brush and letting it dry.

1st up are the trucks and underframe. Remember this is a first coat and will look a bit rough

IMG_0499.jpeg

The engineer side panel of the unit also now has its 1st coats, again it’s rough looking
IMG_0501.jpeg

the radiator grills have been dashed with black (Tamiya panel liner)
IMG_0496.jpeg

There will be some touch up and clean up when I come back tonight to this side.

All paints are the Vallejo Air series, hand brushed. As mentioned the radiators were done with Tamiya’s panel liner.

To blend everything I will be using Pan Pastels, but we are a few days at least away from that.

As always constructive criticism is welcome. Remember though this is a start not the ending. The roughness is part of the process, at least for me.

This client specially requested no airbrushing except for clear coating.

That's looking pretty good already, can't wait to see how this progresses.
