The D&J Railroad -- From Scratch

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

That's a great video Ken. I can see why we haven't seen you on the forum. You must have been one mud slinging son of a gun. I see a lot more scenery underway and it's looking great. What an improvement. Impressive. appl.gif

Good luck on the operating session. Hope you'll have time to take some more video and post it from the op session.

Good luck my friend.

Ken ...excuse me while I reassemble my lower jaw. That is just an unbelievable show. Each small detail of scenery will enhance it even more. You can be very proud of your work.

Running Backward - Video

On occasion, I hear of fantastic model railroad empires on which the owner can run a long cut of empty hoppers backward on their layout. Problem is, they just can't seem to find a camera to record it nor is the layout available to do it again.
I decided to put up my proof. Anybody else?

Great Video Ken. (as usual) Impressive.

That is an excellent way of finding any flaws in trackwork. When I was building my last yard, I backed a 20+ car train through every possible route through the yard in reverse to find any possible bad track. Guess I put the track down right because I never had any derailments.

Thanks for the video.

WELL DONE, Sir! "The Test" has been passed with rolling colors! I will use that method of 'track checking' for sure!

Nice video Ken
I'm going over your entire thread, so I'll know what to do when I start mine...... hope soon
I decided to box in the duct work in the ceiling before starting. Had a few glitches, but nothing major
In the mean time, I've been working on scratch building a vintage train storage barn and 2 bridges.

I picked up a set of bents a month or so ago. They've been sitting on the shelf with the other little projects I've been putting off.
I had finished a few other projects outside and decided to putz around in the basement and got interested in the bents. Where to put this small canyon to span.
Yep, here's a good spot. Double track mainline. A bit of straight track to work with and enough space underneath for the facia to extend down.

Suspended traffic during construction and went to work removing the benchwork.

and finally the track.

Building the trestle structure.

Laying down the cross beams on top of the stringers using a spacer to get an even setting.

This goes together easier than I thought it would.

I'll let the glue setup on this then move it over to the layout to install it in the ravine then lay track on top.

Looking good Ken. Not sure if youve done a trestle before but if you haven't word of advice, the way it sits right there looking pretty, don't move it for at least a day.:D

Pushed on with the trestle this afternoon. Finished it with the small detail diagonal stringers through the bents.

Threw some plaster into the ravine and smoothed it with a paint brush then installed the trestle. Put some weights on top to push it down into the plaster to give it a good anchor.
