So this is where the new extension is going to run:

It is going to be elevated above the existing part of the layout, if I can get it up that high that is :)

Think I have found an easy solution to my Sub Roadbed dilemma. I am going to use 1/4" X 4" X 24" Basswood sheets to form the sub roadbed. That will be plenty strong enough to support the track work, especially when I have 12" centers on my cross beams :)

As such, I have order a quantity of them and should have them in about 5 or so days :)

Jeff, we do have a Joann about an hour away. I never gave them much thought to be honest, although, I did see that they had basswood. How was their shipping and processing of your order? Or did you walk in?

Have to admit, I am keen to get this underway so might take a drive down there tomorrow. We also have a Michaels and a Hobby Lobby in the same area.

I walked in. In the one here, there is hobby wood supply in 2 places. The piece I got was really thin, but that's what I needed. I'm not sure they have anything as thick as what you're looking for.

Think I'll stick to wood work - a bit easier and I can't do as much damage to anything :)

That being said, I am still trying to work out a quick and easy way to put in the "Sub Road Bed" for the new track. There are many options of course but I am trying to find something that wont cost the world, end up with a lot of waste or require more than just me to do.

Maybe a quick search around the house could yield something. If you have them, shed, garage or storage area. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s forgotten where I’ve put things…😂😂

I think I have the solution and it involves using 2" extruded foam. The stuff is light and easily cut to shape so this is the plan - sort of:

lay the track first and position it where I want/need it to go then "trace that track onto the foam. I'll use layers to build up the elevation, the only thing that maybe a little suspect will be the gradient, I don't know - I might be able to form that using the foam by raising one end of it and packing that end.

I think this is the easiest and quickest way of getting this done and I have a lot of foam sitting around :)

Sounds good to me. Silly question, but is this a one way elevation to a slightly higher area or will there be another way to come back down to the main part of the layout? Trying to visualize it in my head.
