Some ho modelers being too rigid

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I was over a friends house to run some trains and we were asked to bring over some of or our favorites. Well I like the modern era the best so I brought over what I liked. Basically a few others were appalled that we would and some others bring over modern era trains when the layout is set in 50's, 60's. The owner of the layout said it was ok as he likes to see all eras represented. This was just a get together of friends and acquaintances to run trains and meet each other.
The guys who complained all left saying they don't like the modern era and we should have known better.

The icing on the cake was when one guy brought over some locomotives in fantasy schemes and the complainers went on to tell us how we are ruining the hobby of model railroading. They then left in a huff.

Btw we had a great time running trains of all eras and showing what we owned. We are planning to get together again in another month to run again. The other guys will not and are not invited to come again. I thought trains are supposed to be fun. It is for me but it seems some others are too ridget!!!!

I wouldn't over think it; you aren't in the wrong. After all, you did bring what you liked. They sounded like the type of guys to take the "NYC is better than PRR" joke too seriously.

Can't you run used cooking oil in a diesel? Make the place smell like french fries? Then diesel wins, right? haha
I don't know if they still do it, but i remember it being reported in the media that England used to employ people to stand on street corners and sniff car exhausts. Any that smelled like french fries got their license plate recorded and a tax bill in the mail for evading fuel tax.

What???? They're going to get their money some way or another I guess. tax tax and more tax. I just hope it goes to good use.

The Grand Canyon Railway burns used cooking oil from restaurants in their steam locomotives. I've never been there, but I bet it probably smells like French fries.😁
You can't just throw old cooking oil in something and expect it to work, it has to be filtered, the process, called transesterification, converts these oils into fuel that can be used as a substitute. So there isn't any smell when it's burnt.

I looked up transesterification as I had never heard of it before. The process used to make the cooking oil into biodiesel. It seems burning straight cooking oil (floaties filtered out) is not that easy, at least for cars. Too thick, needs to be preheated to flow better, gunk up when cold so needs to be flushed with regular diesel before shutting down. What a pain.

But, to burn cooking oil in a steamer? Wouldn't that be similar to a waste oil heater except the oil would be squirted in?

Here's one to blow their minds! J94 pulling SUHA 44s.

Wow. This is one of the most crazy story's I've heard in the model railroad world! I have read some articles in old magazines about some models being too stingy about things like "No young model railroaders in this club. They might break something", but this is just funny!

I think (To say the least) they got triggered. 😂
All hobbies are suppose to be fun! Nothing else.
They shouldn't be so quick to forget that Scale model trains only exist because of Toy Trains! Which in their opinion would be even worse then getting an era wrong.

Great job for standing strong Dave!

The real issue here is these complainers are just plain RUDE. Invited to someone's layouts and then to complain about what another guest brings to the party, just RUDE. They may know everything about what's appropriate on a model railroad, but nothing about being a good guest. My two cents. (I guess it has to be a nickel now.)
