Ahhhhhh.... crap.

Just found out why a facebook friend went quiet back in February.

Hit and killed by a drunk driver out in Henderson NV (the outskirts of Vegas) earlier this year. Sorry to be a downer, but his life story was interesting so I'll share the memory.

What follows reads like a K-drama soap opera. It's a wild story.

"Jim" was a rather tall gent from Fort Wayne IN. Despite our geographic proximity, we never met in person. But connected on FB because of our mutual political activities. Nuff said about that.

I got to know Jim online while he was working as an English Teacher at several academies in China. He was there at the beginning of Covid, screaming that the virus was bigger than the PRC was letting on. (nuf said about that). It was interesting getting his daily reports of what life at ground zero was like.

During that time, he found love with a crazy young Chinese woman. They never married, but had two young daughters together. I'm amazed at how little they had to pay for healthcare that he said was top notch.

Suddenly, he stopped posting about his partner. He explained more when it was obvious that his visa was not being renewed and he had to come back to the US. His partner refused to come with him, and a custody battle ensued for the two girls (oldest in 1st grade?)... He finally won custody through the Chinese courts with a Chinese lawyer.

He and the girls had their flights to the US booked, and then the US state department botched the passports for the girls. So he overstayed his visa trying to get that sorted. Didn't want the girls in limbo. That involved hiring Chinese attorneys to clarify the visa departure delay.

On the day they were to leave, the girls mother showed up at the airport, but Jim didn't see her. The girls did. It took him three days, two private investigators, another attorney, and the Chinese police for that region, but he got his girls back.

We all breathed sighs of relief when he reported the three of them on US Soil. Another short plane ride took them to Vegas, where his mother and sister lived.

He was there for just a few months, when he announced formal conversion to Islam. He'd been going to services and studying since he was in China. He really connected with the religion, and found a faith community near his mother's home. I'm not religious, but was happy for him.

Then he got a knock on the door. The FBI. Seems someone who didn't like his politics and followed him on FB had called him in as threat. He found out that the complaintant was back in Indiana. He had to deal with several visits from the nice agents, and learned from neighbors and folks he knew back in Indiana they'd been interviewed too.

Then he went dark.

I really thought he'd been picked up for something bad.

No. It took his sister a while to post to his page what had happened. Struck by Drunk Driver on his way to picking up his kids at school. Died at the hospital. (edited to correct the accident timeline)

I'll raise a glass to his memory tonight.

always thought your layout was a touch small….just realised it’s 0 or even G!
that’s cheating, so much easier to get the detailed weathering lol. love the steam, the coal, the soot, oooh cotton wool wire inside poking out the loco pull the cotton looser on the tail wooooohoooooow!
My layout is 00 gauge. Older granddaughter has a 0 gauge garden layout.

My life continues to be a running "good news, bad news" joke.
Good news: Home is closed on, and I started moving my stuff in.
Bad news: The company I work for has been purchased by a competitor, and we have a mandatory meeting tomorrow before the place opens to tell us how long we have.
Sigh..
.
Glad the house is sorted.

I am told, (re work) 'As one door closes a better one opens.'

Good morning gang!

64° under cloudy skies , heading to 72°. With a 50% chance of showers today, more of the same tomorrow.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, thought I would pass this along. I initially got it to drill holes in PC crossties while making older turnouts DCC friendly. Now I keep finding more uses. Much lighter and more maneuverable than a Dewalt drill, and slower cutting than a Dremel, and easier on the hands than a pin vice.

Mini drill
nice! How precise is the movement? No wobbling? I hope they offer other sizes of bits.

I got a text from the shop asking for my services today. I went in and was told that a widow had dropped off 2 duffel bags of firearms and bayonets that she found, that were owned by her late husband.

My eyes got wide when I saw 3 operational Sten receivers (wire stocks, a few barrels, and magazines also) and 2 MP18's. The owner wanted me to take detailed pictures for their ATF agent so he could check to see if they were in the registry. There was also a Maxim Model 23 suppressor (22rf). Depending on the what the ATF decides I may have some cool stuff to post for sale on Gunbroker.

Do let us know. If I were to wager a guess I’d say they’re not :(.

If they are they’re worth a pretty penny.

Is this the MG18 you’re referring to? https://smallarmsreview.com/germany...mg-tank-und-fleigerabwehr-machine-gun-of-wwi/

Or a variant or derivative of MG08 like MG08/18 ?

Or something else?

Good evening folks, busy day earlier, got the oil changed in the Kia, one of the best service departments I have ever seen.

On the department of paint affected by tariffs, I will whole-heartedly recommend Reaper Miniature's paints out of Denton, TX. They make an excellent line of paints BUT the neatest thing they have is a paint matching page using your image.
Their stuff is really good, the equal of anyone's.

Got some heating oil today. Not exactly my favorite thing to think about because it means winter's comin' and summer is my favorite time of year. I really need to take a tip from some of my relatives and finally move out west.
Good thing out here in the west is we don’t use heating oil.

I remember as a kid in New England the truck coming to fill the tank. Eventually my dad bought a wood furnace that was hooked to the oil furnace so we could use either. Wood furnace got used a lot more.

Sorry, MP18. One is very early 4 digit sn with NO safety. The 5 digit has the safety that was added in 1940/41 for the police and SS.
Still cool. MG18 would have been cooler ;).

Closest thing to an historical SMG I’ve shot was a post war built wartime parts MP40 on a new tube.

I’ve also shot M11/9, Uzi, M-16, and several MP5. But they’re all modern. The MP40 was a single chance at the range and even though it was a a parts gun in new U.S. tube I could envision being in the war when shooting it since it was still a piece from the war in a roundabout way.

Btw I saw a video on YouTube about MP40s being found by Ukrainians in some Russian captured stockpiles.

Thank you for all the kind thoughts for the wife.

Troy, that's a sad story. Raise another glass for me.

Terry: Best wishes.

My first attempt at doing some modeling in a good while.

Working on the load yet. Green fellow in the background is my helper.............(squeeze out cramped hands)..... Mostly used alcohol based washes to dull the yellow.

More fun tomorrow (dentist).

Been cooler though last few days have been in the 80s I think. A few days of 70s before that. But it gets really cool at night. Low 50s if not cooler.

I was notified today that a company I had done a screening interview with 2 weeks ago wants to schedule me for a first round interview with the hiring manager. So we'll see how that is. I had been wondering because the guy had been anxious 2 weeks ago to get started and I had not heard anything. We'llsee when they want to do it.

I think I mentioned that the wife and I are going to Japan for about 12 days right before Thanksgiving, to pick up our son, who has been doing missionary work in Japan (Hokkaido). We've hd the airline tickets to and from Japan since March. Two one ways since we're two people going and three coming back. So split airlines ANA (on United planes) and Delta.

Yesterday I scheduled a domestic flight for us form Sapporo to Kobe on Skymark Airlines, a Japanese LCC. We flew them 3 times on our last trip in May/June (with our daughter). Technically I had to schedule two flights since my son is under 25 and they had a special youth fare but you couldn't set that up in the same reservation online with normal adult. Anyway, when making the reservation for me and the wife, I clicked on the "female" button for her but it didn't take (I may have clicked next to it or the browser missed it). I didn't notice it because your brain assumes it is correct when you are doing it and doesn't watch that it happened. This is why you don't always catch stupid or funny autocorrects -- your brain saw you type it correctly even if it wasn't. Anyway, when I got the email confirmation of the reservation I noticed it had Mr on both names and M under the "sex" column. Unfortunately they don't have an email for customer service. Only a phone and of course it's in Japan. They say that you can't make name changes but the name is correct. I asked my sister in law in Japan to call them to see what we can do to get that updated since the name is fine. We'll see what happens. If they won't do it I'm tempted just forget and play dumb when we get on the plane. Our previous experience was that it was self check-in at the kiosk and they n ever looked at ID or anything. Someone may look at the boarding pass and notice it but probably not. If they do the name matches her ID / passport...

I may have mentioned it before but we have a linear drain in our wet room soaking tub room ("Japanese Bath") at the base of the tube. It started leaking. I thought I had seen where it could be leaking and applied waterproofing to it in several coats but when I tested it it was still leaking. So obviously somewhere else. Tonight I'm going down to clean off soap scum and stuff off the metal backplate that acts as a flashing for the tile above the drain and then after it dries again am going to try and apply a few coats of the waterproofing to the interface layer between the actual one piece drain thing and this metal as I think it may be leaking there. It takes a few minutes of water running for it to start to leak through the hole in the subfloor where the pipe comes through (it's not leaking from the pipe). The way it's made it's hard to see. I'm hoping I don't have to break some tile out to find it and then retile stuff.

The waterproof stuff is Semco waterproof membrane. Highly recommended. 10x better than Red Guard and similar. It is a polyurea liquid polymer type thing. We also used it on the outside of the house over the foam from above grade down over the heavy membrane sheets that cover the foundation foam from footings on up. And then we put some acrylic parge coats and more Semco and then some more (different company) acrylic large / stuff stuff and then a couple layers of clear of this Semco. No water gets anywhere near leaking into the foam. It's way awesome stuff in case you need to waterproof a shower or tub area before tiling or putting in whatever wall stuff you're using, or anything inside or outside on your house. Can be used to seal swimming pools, etc as well.

Nothing else of any news to post.

My bottle of AMMO paint was to be delivered on Monday but the post office in FT. Worth Tx sent it to North Carolina. It has hit 2 mail centers there. Tracking says it will be here tomorrow................fat chance, as it will need to go through Ft. Worth again. Well at least it should be well mixed.🤪🤪🤪

Take care....John

I had two of my friends down here about 2 months ago to give me a home appraisal. While they were I wanted to show them my model railroad but the lift gate at the time would not close because the wood expanded at some point so I couldn't run any trains. A few weeks ago, I fixed the gate and it's now back in working order. The track on the lift gate runs through a spring meadow and is modeled as such. Swal
