If the price of beef is too high:

Or do like I do, watch for sales.
We picked up 75/25 fresh ground beef this morning at Giant Foods. It was a three-day sale at $3.99/pound. I may stop by and get another 3.5lbs tomorrow morning.
Warning scroll past if your not interest in cows or chickens or ducks
Poor cows most are only alive for us to turn their udders into commbersone milking machines, and we steal their babies, the rest except the odd lucky bull are fed asap and slaughtered. Their problem is if we were not eating them we would use the land therefore they would have no place to live.
IF they had a choice and could migrate the informed once would be on the first slow boat to India where many consider them sacred and let them walk about, the others ? They still eat them.

CHICKENS are right royally fxxxxxx the type that is bred for meat mature in WEEKS and if they lived beyond that their weight is so obese it breaks their legs. The egg layers can live a good number of years maybe a dogs life, and in a farmyard or house garden may manage that BUT in business a chicken lays the most eggs in its firs-st laying year then that drops to 90 then 80 percent, most intense chicken producers what as many eggs as possible and dumping young healthy ish (not kept in great conditions) chickens for the new lot to be farmed, a chicken produces 200-300 there about all depends on the breed. The little fluffy bantams are not bred for eggs nor for meat they are usually well treated by their owners and have a half decent life.
life and paying taxes and keeping your head above water and for the big boys mere greed is not conducive to well kept healthy living in fresh air animals. I could moan more, I am NOT someone who goes out telling other people their business, I eat meat, and dairy and eggs with relish, I do just feel that animals are unfortunately given short shift and I do not have a go at the farmers either, because. A king a profit every year hoping the weather will be perfect and the taxes affordable is a pipe dream
plus I own chickens, and when it is wet their area is gross and when it is dry their are lice and pests, and rats try to steal their food their eggs and their chicks, as do squirrels and some birds.
I have far better results than the mothers do, I try to keep a mum and babies together, the white cockerel was a character I called Donald after a certain person I like Donald and those model chickens are far easier to care for. I mostly showed ducks because sone of them get to trust you. chickens only one was every actually friendly and she got scoffed by a fox

If your looking at the food bowl yes that is pasta with the mixed corn
they get it in warm weather and give you a dirty look when it is not on the menu.
They get free range pellet mix, apples in season, soft fruit in season, spinach cold months from the polytunnel, dandelions spring and autumn, slugs, snails when I clean in the polytunnel, oyster shell and small stone for their digestion, the geese are scared of me because I wade in and pick them up by their feet if I have too - cowards.Honk and run.I have incubators and other kit but we do it for fun and do not sell. Any extra boys do end up in the freezer and we don’t not hand rear them often. mainly because it is a lot of work. I understand it is very hard to be profitable and I can see that we spend far too much money on food let alone the rest of the kit.
but it suits self sufficiency ethos.
the goats were returned to breeder after the broke my angle and knee. we had planned on pigs but that idea went west with the goats, especially as I admit I was then scared of them.
OMG this post is too long….sorry
