Good Evening!

Huey - If you are inclined to celebrate anniversaries, then have a good one!

This is interesting!
My neighbour owns a 2006 Honda Ridgeline, that was recalled for corrosion issues on the trucks frame.
So, he takes it in to a Honda dealer, where the truck is condemned; as in, now he can't sell or insure it. He tells me the repairs are quoted at 12k. Or better yet, they'll be happy to sell him a new vehicle.
Sounds like a sucker job on an 83yr old man to me.
The truck is the one in this photo, in front of the Jeep:

Looks like a new vehicle to me!

Have a great evening. Goodnight!

Another update on the house project.

Yesterday and today my brother-in-law and his contractor son-in-law, both up in Wyoming, came down to help me out. I pay them to come help and it helps them too. My brother-in-law was a hospital lab manager for a long time but they overworked him and he burned out. He quit and has been working on starting a business and so any extra side jobs help. My nephew-in-law also appreciate as much work as he can though he keeps pretty busy.

Anyway, I had some work meetings yesterday morning and my boss called me in the afternoon with a customer escalation with bad bug found by an important customer so I had to go home, attend a Zoom, and figure stuff out, but otherwise I and my brother- and nephew-in-law worked most of the day and my son came up for a few hours after his college online class and some assignments, before he had to get ready for his UPS evening shift. Nephew-in-law had to leave around 5:30pm yesterday as his wife and kids came down as well and she needed to go to some store before it closed or something but my brother-in-law worked with me until 8pm. We basically laid out a vapor barrier and foam insulation for under the basement slab yesterday. We almost finished. Just had a small amount of foam left. Everywhere there is radiant heating and cooling in the basement we laid out this greenish foam called "Hyrdofoam" which is made to take PEX tubing pushed down into it. To "thermally isolate" the rest of the basement slab so it doesn't draw heat out and into the ground we just used 2" EPS foam insulation sheets from Home Depot -- shiny side up.

Today we laid all the PEX down. You just snap it in between the numbs. Some corners you want to put a plastic foam staple in to make sure it doesn't pop up but they could lay 250 ft runs in about 10 minutes once I had gone with our builder's crayon on a stick and laid out the path for them to follow (more or less following the engineering plans for the radiant).

Our structural engineer had laid out the slab so that it was thicker, no foam, along the outer walls, so our PEX layout differed a little from the engineer's drawing of the PEX layout since he measured from the wall and we have a 3-5" gap before the foam started.

We also didn't lay the foam over the footings so that the slab concrete will be about 7" thick right over the footing, with a little extra rebar in it at foam level so that the bearing walls are only resting on concrete with no foam sandwiched in between (also not taken into account by the radiant heat engineer). But we made it work. We have't pressure tested the piping yet as we only had an hour before it was dark to set it up and figure it out. I'll do that beginning of the coming week.

We also had 4000 sq ft of "6x6 R2.1 remesh" -- the wire grid panels you see in the pic below (all rusty of course). We had to get them into the house basement, which was not easy. At first we had on guy up on the ground, one guy on the porch wall, one guy up on the inner wall, and me down in the basement. They would pass this 20' x 8' wire mesh from person to person and then down to me where it would inevitably fall once it was completely over the wall and it would bonk me in the head (after a couple smacks on the head from it falling on me I went and got my hard hat out of the car). It was taking forever. Then we got the bright idea to make a bridge from the ground to the porch to the back wall. We took 6 12' and 6 16' scaffolding planks. We laid two sets of 3 each of the 16' from the ground out to the porch, and then the 12' from the porch to the rear wall. I screwed a 2x4 into each set of 3 on one end so they would stay in place relative to each other, and at the porch end we screwed the 12' into the 16', and at the far end the 12' each went between the vertical rebar sticking up so they wouldn't slide out. Then my son and nephew-in-law could just go drag a steel mesh sheet up to the wall and lower it down to me and my brother-in-law. Was about 10x faster than the way we had been doing it. Pics below of our bridge system and the stack of mesh after we had moved it all.

We got a lot of mesh moved into place in the garages, vault room, and cold storage under the porch and started to move a small amount into the main room over the PEX (we want to do the pressure test before we move too much over the PEX). I also need to fionish the rebar over the footings. The mesh and bar will be raised up right before the pour so that it is in the middle of the slab.

Lots done the last two days. We were all working until almost 8pm and dark time and we started around 8:20am (at least my BIL and Nephew-IL did -- I was closer to 9am and my son came a little later as he gets home late from UPS and so doesn't get up so early).

We need to pressure test and finish laying out mesh and bar so we can be ready for the slab pour this coming Friday (knock on wood).

One aggravating thing about this was that we had 2 boxes of PEX sent to us and the vendor shipped Fedex Ground. It was shipped 09/02 from NY and arrived in Utah and one of the two boxes was delivered 09/08. For some reason the other box of the combined shipment was sent to KY and then back. It went out for delivery yesterday (to the new house address, where they already delivered one box the week before). But for some reason the driver reported the address was wrong and didn't deliver. As soon as I got the notification I was on the phone to Fedex and after fighting their interactive voice response system, I had to wait for 15-20 minutes on hold, as I walked around Lowe's trying to buy more vapor barrier. I talked to their customer service and explained the address was correct, that they had already delivered one of the two boxes there the week before, that they were a week late, and that we needed the box delivered asap, and that I had a team there waiting for it to install it. The guy opened a case and promised me it would be delivered today by 12 noon. I spelled out "special delivery instructions" that they appended to the shipment, spelling out it was a house under construction, the only one on the street, and the house number was in order for the houses on both sides. (I had explained that to the company shipping it as well but I don't know if they attached it as instructions on the original shipment, but the first box was delivered ok).

Today at noon it still was not delivered. It just said "Out for delivery by end of day" on the tracking. I called Fedex ad talked again, and explained again that we had a team waiting and needed it asap to finish it today (and indeed we had already laid the first box worth of PEX lines). I asked the lady to send a note to the station so that they could call the driver and tell him to get to our house asap and that Fedex had promised me the day before it would be there by noon. It finally did show up a little after 3pm and my nephew-in-law was up close to the street and saw the guy stop. The driver was looking all over the power pedestal and the Honey Bucket porta-potty for the house number and he looked confused. My nephew-in-law told the guy it was the right place and just to leave it but he was still confused. I came up and told him it was right and thanked him and he left it on the sidewalk and left. I went and look at the box and the local station had printed out a satellite or aerial photo of the neighborhood that had our lot on it and marked with the street address, and the local Fedex station had highlighted the house in Yellow, so it was obvious to the driver it was the right house, but he was still confused. Luckily we were there and not out to lunch... (The aerial view photo was kind of cool as it was pretty recent as you could easily see the house under construction in it with the outline of the foam foundation etc.)

I just returned home for my Myrtle Beach golf / beach vacation. Myrtle is 730 miles from me. On no stopping highway driving my truck gets 320 miles on a tank of gas. I stopped 2 times to fill up. The trip took 13 hours. If I owned a EV I would have had to stop 2 times for recharging. That is if I was able to find an EV charging station. If all the cars I passed on the way down were EV's (I mean thousands) they too would be stopping to recharge. I don't see it happening. It makes trips over 300 miles almost impossible when everyone owns EV's and a real pain in the ***.

How about the charge times at each stop? Takes me about ten minutes for gas but I go inside for a bathroom break and usually a snack or drink.

I hope all these charging stations they plan on building would be able to charge in 10 mins. Every exit on I95 has a least 2 gas stations maybe more. This would have to duplicated by EV 10-minute charging stations. Anything over 10 minutes charging times is unacceptable and will not work. I with the guy on here who said liquid nitrogen engines are the way to go and forget about the EV's.

That PEX is wonderful stuff! Quit copper when I found it about '04. Ya, you still have to use copper for some stuff. Glad you are doing a pressure test. In fact, be ready to charge it with water as you will be able to see where the leaks are. When I used it you had to snap and crimp the connections. Maybe it is just me, but it seems that something always goes sideways for some reason or another. You don't want to find you have a leak somewhere after you get it encased in concrete. Of course, you probably thought of all of this. Friend did a 38 x 48 shop and decided JIC to section the runs into a manifold so if he had to he could turn off the leaking section down the road in the future. Maybe overkill, maybe not.

Good Morning All. Clear and 76° at this location. Doesn't look like there will be any change in the weather for the rest of the month. Seems like I saw 0.3" of rain on 9/1, but none since then.

Yesterday was household chores day, some normal and some in advance of leaving for vacation next Saturday.

Thanks for the comments and reactions regarding the fence; Guy, Patrick, Tom O, Joe, Hughie, James, Smudge, Tom, George.

Not much in the train shed yesterday. I did some odds and ends and added the parking lot stripes at the 7-11.

Here's another look at the chain link fence.
IMG_1732.JPG

Guy -
I tried working on the layout a bit yesterday, but, was interrupted by the G-kids coming over.
It's a practice run for when they move across the road.
Dave B - I failed to post yesterday that the chain link fence is pre-made sections from Woodland Scenics.
IMG_1726.JPG

Sometimes it's just not worth taking the time to make the homemade one from tulle and wire. The posts in the WS kit are a bit oversized, but still look OK.
Joe - Yep! That low rider belongs to Ramon's son. Ballasting - I don't mind ballasting at all. Tree making and soldering are my downfall.
George - EV charging stations are a rarity near me. There's six south of me in Denton TX, 25 miles away. None are are on the Interstate, most are in the "upper-class" neighborhoods. Two are at Walmarts. Going north, there are none in the county that I live in. I would have to cross the Oklahoma border to find one at the Winstar Casino - another high roller place. That's also 25 miles away. There might be one at the Walmart 26 miles north, but they don't list it.

Today is the Air Forces birthday.
Everybody have a great day.

Part of the EV plan is to force everyone to get solar panels as well. If most EV users are charging at home, the grid will be able to support the cross-country travelers.
Once again, I'm not sayin EVs are a great idea, but that the government is forcing us to them. Can ya afford panels? prolly not but the government doesn't care. Just shut up and finance them. On the other hand, you can rent em but the cost is about as bad as buyin them.
What are ya gonna do when gasoline is no longer available for the common man and ya have to wait two years for your EV?
As for the car heat for the colder parts of the country. The notion in the heads of those folks who are planning your future is that the heating system should work. Ohhhh, there might be the occasional situation where it won't, but tough cookies for you.
Once again, somehow folks think those planners really care about you.

Good Morning All!
36F in Libby.
69F in Olive Branch.

Pellets what a PITA. Price per ton in Libby is $245. Talked with one of the local vendors and they would not budge on the price even if I ordered a quantity. No price breaks for 10, 15 or 20 ton. Geesh. So come Monday I'ma going about it different. We have 2 manufactures pretty close to Libby, 150 and 45 miles. Will give them a call for a truck load price. If flatbed 24 pallets, boxvan 22 pallets. Found out from my company that they usually charge a $500 minimum which will work for either distance, cheaper when they found out I am an employee. Then all I have to do is fork them off/out depending. Boxvan has hoop jump as I do not have a dock in my back 40 and will have to get them to the back of the box before forking. We will see.

In other news, I have been observing the local people that are doing labor for folks; landscaping, painting, carpentry and such. Maids in motels and janitorial too. Pretty much none of them speak English let alone understand it. This has been almost everywhere we have been. I suspect as we get more crowded, your gonna see bartenders, cocktail waitresses, servers and the lot to have these same types of people. We still have not figured out how many Americans are paying the bills, most have no visible means of support and are not getting any of the many jobs available. Typical people, 2 new cars in driveway of new(er) houses. Are Americans getting lazy? Maybe. Political? No, facts.

And I forgot. Got the fubar drive line out of the Edge yesterday. Both center bearings were non-existent. Now we can drive it home with all our stuff in a couple weeks! New drive line is patiently waiting at home for something to do.

Good Morning, all.

I'm finally done adjusting track, replacing ties, and installing Caboose switches on my layout yard.
Layout_09-17-2022 (1).JPG

The control station has been adjusted to switch the 7 blocks and is all wired up. There's one different switch because I only had six SPST switches, and used a DPDT switch for the 7th block.
LayoutControl_09-17-2022.JPG

I'm considering putting an analog DC voltmeter in that empty space on the control panel. That, though, is only a thought for the G-kids 'Hey, cool' factor.

The Caboose switch seen in the following photo, is the only one on the layout that is not mounted on blocks. I find it much harder to switch when mounted flat on the layout surface. You need to have nails, and I keep mine trimmed.
Layout_09-17-2022 (2).JPG

Here's a photo of a Bachmann GP40 train actually running on the layout. I'm just playing here.
LayoutRun_09-17-2022.JPG

I don't even own a proper caboose, yet. Haven't been able to find something acceptable that was affordable, so the caboose will have to wait.

And I had my first real life suicide, when this misguided figure got to close to the tracks:
LayoutFigure_09-17-2022.JPG

Anyway, now that I can run trains for a little bit, I feel a whole lot more interested. This should be a good winter of modelling coming up.

Terry - Thank you for the link concerning the Ridgeline. I'll show it to the neighbour sometime today.

Have a fine Sunday everyone! Mine will be wet and cool, but, if you have a layout to work on, that don't matter.

Morning all,

Feeling a little better. I actually got some real sleep last night. So far, as long as I don't do too much moving around, I'm doing ok. Gonna try to go cold turkey on the ibruprophen and see what's up. Wife not feeling good, but Covid test is negative. She's got an appointment at an immediate emergency clinic soon, but I'll have to drive her. This should be fun.....

BBL.

Good morning all,

cloudy here 71 and gonna be a cloudy day. Did not watch any news all day yesterday so not bearing the burdens of the world this morning.

Hughie - congrads on the anniversary

Willie - no problem about the pre made fence. I don't think I would have scratch built one, either

Chet - great layout pics, also grandson almost as cute as your pups

Chad - that house project is a massive undertaking

Ken DJ - I know government advocates elec cars but they also are clueless about how we are going to charge them how we gonna run all those power lines? or build the batteries or actually pretty much clueless about just about everything. And for the rapid charging, what kind of transmission line is it gonna take to deliver that dose of electricity? Say get ten or twenty of them running at once.

Did a lot on the layout yesterday, got a corner of landscaping done also fixed many box cars then found my spare parts:

IMG_2666r.JPG

found another box to with more gear box covers, coupler kits, etc

Also put up some lights, will post them tomorrow I think

Here is the landscaping:
IMG_2663r.JPG

The area left of the bridge, I put down some cardboard and paper towels first, used the glue gun and paper towels, also glue water mix

You can see one of the new lights by the freight shed, I will post more tomorrow.

I also straightened up the rider as he was a little crooked

Heading off to church

Good morning radiant heat PEX tube installers, users (I am one), coffee drinkers, non coffee drinkers (like me) Queen laying in state watchers, (not one) EV users and refusers. A nice start to the 46th year of our marriage. Cool in the 50’s and light rain on the way to the 10AM church wedding in Racine, Wisconsin. Right now about 80 miles west as the crow flies and 46 years later, it in the 50’s, the light rain was brief overnight and the future still looks good!

I now have higher respect for David Beckham. Nice he stood in line like a real subject to the Queen instead of using his celebrity. I read about this online.

Some of you may have read or seen on national news the terrible murder suicide in the Madison, Wi. area last weekend. A male PA killed his wife also a PA after a struggle with a knife with the kids in the house, they found her dead in the bedroom! He then went to a highway got out of his vehicle got hit by a car but barely hurt. Drove a few miles away out to I90/94 got out of his car and walked in front of a semi! The UW Health system employed both as Physician Assistants and issued a terrible (in my eyes) statement that they are a family and this is terrible but no mention of these poor kids who called 911 and saw mom dead. what a waste, if you are depressed please seek help. Not only are these kids scarred for life but the murderer also impacted the 2 people he tried to die in front of, the 1st driver and then later the semi driver who it has been reported is a mental mess. Terry has seen her at the Verona Clinic and when the daughter had her day care business she had 2 of the 3 kids that found mom. I was unaware but read that suicides by medical folks is their #1 cause of death before 50. So sad.

Well, after that bummer I had to get off my chest, thank you very much, it shall be a good day! Volleyball back on Campus but at the Fieldhouse that holds 8000 fans. The attendance record 16000+ set for the regular season game Friday was kind of cool even though the defending NCAA champs unexpectedly lost. I image the poor team they play today at 1PM is in for a severe beating. Home around 3-4-5, dinner out at 6 and Packer vs the Bears for Terry at 7:30. Trains for me maybe tonight as I doubt I will watch a NFL game I used to schedule weekends around. As much as I used to love NFL Sundays till about 2018, I don’t really miss it. I still read ESPN online but most of my sports news I now get from Sportsnet.ca.

I see on TV, Terry thankfully has the sound on Bluetooth going only to her hearing aides, that the kidnapping of illegals by certain governors continues. That’s not political, that’s a media term. Should make for some interesting TV when they try to arrest the people involved. Just saying! But IMO it will never happen.

If the talking heads on TV keep talking about recession and it happens, even though USA employment ( by official numbers) is at its highest levels ever, is it a self fullfilling prophecy? Should we then lock up Economists and Media know it alls if it happens? You know, as instigators or accomplishes to the Wall Street guys who want this to cover their shorting of stocks. Or does employment have nothing to do with the economy? You know, like US Railroad employees don’t have anything to do with making profits but are a drain to the RR bottom line.

The US rail strike has been averted for the immediate near future but if one group doesn’t ratify the treaty the other 11 unions will honor the strike and not cross picket lines. From what I have read, the rank and file of the BLE ( brotherhood of locomotive engineers) is balking and the Union leadership is not pushing the settlement very enthusiastically. I wonder how the guys running for office are handling that little dilemma? No different then before, ignore till it becomes another last minute crisis.

I stopped yesterday to buy the October 2022 issue of RMC at the LHS. Tom Johnson in my mind is one of those special modelers we have in the hobby and his latest layout is featured on the cover and is the main story. His details and backdrop blending is second to none! The LHS no longer carries it or MRR since 2018. I stopped subscribing to both around that time but definitely before the Covid bloom of 2020.

For the next 13.5 billion we ship overseas in military equipment let’s also spend 13.5 billion on feeding our hungry. Or better yet will 14 billionaires in the US step up and contribute that. Or even better yet, would all billionaires in the US contribute 1% of their wealth and they can have another tax write-off and end food hunger. Huckster Elon Musk actually has a plan he says that could do that, if there is no government interference. I would contribute 1% ( and I dislike the Huckster) also even though I am far from billionaire status. But because he says no government involvement the tax write off currently is not allowed so his plan is still at zero funding.

The new internet bill arrived in the inbox yesterday. With 1 gig service $49.99 plus taxes will be $56.00 is what I recorded talking to the TDS pusher/dealer/customer rep. $14.99 1 time charge for set up fees was never mentioned in the conversation either. The bill says $169. The billing office is not open on weekends. In Wisconsin recording a conversation on the phone is not illegal without a warrant if 1 person in the conversation is aware it’s being recorded. I was aware I was recording it.

I will be traveling starting tomorrow. I will not have the IPadPro with me as I promised Terry. I will check in and read the forum but contributing via the IPhone just isn’t going to happen.

Ok, feeling better, thanks for putting up with me this morning. Off to the weathering bench
