Good morning all,

We have 53° and some clouds. Big buck crossed in front of me today, had to brake for him. Yesterday it was a big racoon, usually a few big wild turkeys. Most of my excitement comes from driving to work in the morning!

Snowman, Todd, I am terrible at remembering song titles and words, usually there is only a phrase or bit of a tune. Don't usually listen to the radio except maybe a half hour on the way home from work. I don't have a playlist but do enjoy when a song comes up that fits my mood,

Lately have heard the BEST train song of all time, has the words "rock Island line" in it prominently, is fast moving and exciting, from the 50's I think. That is an example of how I would be able to contribute to the proposed thread. Maybe best share our music in the Coffee Shop.

I was pretty close, googled it and it is 1961

I love it, love it

Good morning to all. 55f degrees heading to a nice 74 with a calm wind. The WeatherChannel app says it’s partly cloudy but being the glass is 1/2 full type of guy I’d like to say partly sunny. However, I have been up as I write this sentence for 71 minutes and there has been no appearance yet of the Sun!

Time in the train room, walked with the sister and wife and a couple good meals yesterday. Now it seems our living room needs a new rug over the rug and they want to go shop today. The invited daughter is going along. I didn’t even have to say no I don’t want to go, I wasn’t asked. I have learned even when invited along for 80% of household shopping my opinion is not needed. A rug, I have never hated what she has purchased in the past, so why would I today? I can cut grass. That grass with 4 days of rain that ended Monday morning is truly growing before the eyes!

Solar panels at night! We have had solar panels since the early 90’s. After sundown I am not aware of any power being generated in those years. Wind of course however does.

Remember the Karen that put her car through our flower beds a couple months ago? Well we got served yesterday. A civil case she is sueing us for having the flower beds in the right of way as she was just turning around. The County Road in front of our entranceway has a right of way of 90’ from the center line of the road to property lines on either side. The entranceway gate and flower beds are a minimum 125’, it’s a nuisance legal suit.

I planted some trees yesterday, on the layout.

Good morning!

Yesterday was our first day with Fall-like weather. Sweet sorrow. I'll miss the acrobatic Purple Martins when I mow later today. They have begun their trip south for the Winter. At least I have a nice indoor, cold weather hobby! Although, I did hear on the news this morning that the Eastern part of the US is predicted to have warmer than average weather in the near future.

They also said the Western parts will be cooler and wetter than normal. I'm sure the "wetter" part is welcome news.

Snowman, Todd, I am terrible at remembering song titles and words, usually there is only a phrase or bit of a tune. Don't usually listen to the radio except maybe a half hour on the way home from work. I don't have a playlist but do enjoy when a song comes up that fits my mood,

[So then, and quoting logandsawman in post #672...here we go!]

Good Morning All. Clear, calm and 64° here. Windows are all open. Pool is still a respectable 83° which should last a few more days. From my experience, the day length and sunlight angle are no longer conducive to the thing heating up after 9-15, and too much heat is lost overnight. I have a new water dam to try this year so I don't have to drain 25% of the water to keep it out of the plumbing and pump/filter system; where it is subject to freezing during really cold spells. Should reduce the 3500 gallons or so that I have to add back in the spring.

I don't know what channel my wife was watching on TV earlier this week, but it was a continual helicopter shot of the Queen's hearse driving through the countryside, I think it was still in Scotland. It reminded me of the 90's when we got to watch the OJ Simpson car chase in it's entirety! And this is not a comment on the importance of the Queen herself, but just another example of how boring some news media here can be.

I spent much of my morning mowing the final part of the yard. All is now complete for a few days.
Then my wife and I reviewed the retirement accounts in preparation for a consultation this afternoon with the new financial services advisor. It took T Rowe Price two months to transfer my inherited accounts over to my current financial server; they just didn't want to let it go. With inherited accounts, one must start taking an RMD, and since one of my accounts that I inherited from my brother was already one that he had inherited from my late father and was taking a distribution from, I need information. The information that we obtained from the IRS is as confusing as any other info from them. Since we don't take regular distributions from any of our other retirement accounts, this is new to us and will most likely require us to pay considerably more in federal income taxes, we need to get it right. As it stands now, I have no tax liability for 2022 because we have been supplementing SS with a draw down of our excessive saving and money market accounts.

We had a great anniversary celebration meal at a real nice eatery in the Dallas suburb of Addison last night. It is less than a half mile from Discount Model Railroads which we visited before going for our meal. The place was packed and I can see why it is reservation only. I had a 16 oz rib eye steak (very medium rare) and my wife had Carne Asada, which is a Mexican style skirt steak. Excellent food which was served with Yorkshire Pudding instead of the usual bread. I couldn't see the steak on the plate when it was served as it was covered with an enormous mountain of sauteed mushrooms. The place was pricey as I noted yesterday, after I added the gratuity, the bill was $200 for the two of us. I had asked the waitress to take our picture, dropping the hint that it was our 50th anniversary, hoping for a complimentary dessert or something. Instead, just as we were standing up to leave, the manager came over and handed us a gift card worth $40!!! That took some of the sting out of the original bill, but it means making the 130 mile round trip again at some point. Well, the train store is nearby and so are both of my daughters and three grandkids. There are other things on the menu that caught my eye.

Thanks for the ongoing likes for the pictures from Will Rogers Gardens, and I assume my sometimes lengthy posts; Sherrel, Troy, Karl, Mikey, Hughie, Dave B, Chad, Joe, Curt, Patrick, Tom, Louis, OB Ken.

No train shed yesterday, as we left for Dallas in the early afternoon. I did drop $440 at the train store, I hadn't been there in over four months. All supplies and detail parts including re-stocking some styrene shapes, DPM walls, and paints. Got about two dozen figures and a few vehicles. I'll unpack today and take a few pictures as well as post on the RPO thread.

The last stop that we made on our OKC road trip Friday was at the Air Park on the grounds of Tinker AFB. All planes are static, all have fake covers on the engine intakes and all had their windshields papered and taped like at an auto paint shop. But it was still interesting. It mostly featured aircraft that were either built at or served at Tinker over the years. It is still an active AFB, but visitors are not allowed inside near the real planes.

It's interesting because when I used to see them flying overhead in the 80's - early 90's they seemed a lot bigger than when sitting on the ground.
I have more that I need to sort out, hopefully in a day or two. I hope that you enjoy part of our nation's history.

Todd - While we haven't had to do any "forcing" with the SSA ourselves, my wife had to do so regularly for her clients when she worked at H&R Block. In some cases, they eventually get caught up on their own and then pay interest on the difference. Ken here on the forum posted about his experience "forcing" them in post #626. They need to use that $87B and get a new computer system. Here's a link to a report from the General Accounting Office from less than a year ago. IRS Computer
Dave B - It can be complicated to decide when to start SS depending on a lot of other circumstances and individual preferences. My "full retirement age" according to them was 66. My wife started drawing hers two years ahead of me since she is older. I could wait the three years from retirement to start the payments because besides her SS, she was still working four months a year at H&R Block, drawing unemployment during the summer and I was using the RMD from the inherited IRA that I received from Dad. I could have waited longer but the trade-off between the higher future monthly payments, for me, was not as good as leaving money in the retirement accounts. I had also finally exhausted the inherited IRA as well and no longe had RMD's. Every case will be different. And yes to others who wonder if your payments go up if you keep working even though you are already getting a check. Hers went up annually based on the income every year for te five years that she worked after first drawing the benefit. Some years we did have to pay federal income tax on the unemployment.
Lonnie Donegan - What a treat. He was a lot more famous in Great Britain than here.
Guy - I always wired up segments of the layout as I built them in order to run trains. Initially it was going back and forth for 15' until more was built. I was particularly itchy since I had dismantled the old layout 2 years earlier.

Everybody have a great day. Hope to see you over on Western Wednesday later.

I have individual inverters on each panel. A single inverter will shut down your whole system if it should fail.
I contacted the installer and asked him what the system should be doing under a full moon. That's what he gets for selling a system to a retired person who is technically curious.
Installer responded already. Said the system will toggle on at 30 volts from each panel. Moonlight doesn't generate enough to do that.
I'm thinking the inverters toggle off at a minimum level of voltage coming into them. Full sunlight will provide about 1000 watts per square meter while moonlight is about .1 (one tenth) of a watt for the same area.

Sunday, we had 5 TV channels doing the same thing, watching the hearse drive from Balmoral to Edinburgh, (5 channels, one helicopter) I have no idea why, tho.
Last night was the same, RAF Northolt to Buck Palace, it's now from there to Westminster, I'm sure tonight will be televised coverage of people filing past the coffin while she is lying-in-state, which is 24hrs a day for the next 4 days, I think their covering that as well, so now I can count people and not sheep if I can't sleep I suppose.

You started it (see the new thread). YOUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuurrrrr fault...!.

That said...thanks.

Good Morning!

Today will be a winterizing the yard day! I don't want to have to worry about doing that over the coming hunting season.

TomO - I am very impressed with the layout work you are accomplishing. Well done, indeed! It looks fantastic!

DaveB - I always enjoy the layout photos you post, from both the old and new layouts.

Willie - Aircraft museums are among my favorite in the museum world. You took some nice photos in the one you visited. Thanks for posting those.

I've received more Oxford vehicles in the mail. Needed them like a hole in the head, but, I'm still glad I ordered them. Going to just leave these in the plastic boxes; thinking maybe gifts for the grandsons.
OxfordCars_09-14-2022.JPG

When the postman came to the door, he wanted another $15.00. Apparantly, Canada Post has raised their delivery fee again. Mail Order seems to becoming a thing of the past.

Gotta go. The wife has already started the jobs, and is hollaring for me.
Have a great day!

Tom, your scenery is to be envied!

Shopping, Rug? Ironic you would mention that. Wife just made a huge purchase of a new rug, I resisted for months but gave in (resistance is futile)

Spent way more than I wanted and I know the rug will be replaced in 5 years maybe since she has to replace everything. Shopping with wife, always a terrible idea as I am like an arrow hitting the target square on and wife like the scattergun that hits a ton of stuff, much of it unintentional, results in a huge headache.

subject change: (rant) funny how things can only get done with workers, yet corporate put a layer of "managers" in there. Makes it a little like the workers are some type of wild beast and will do nothing without the whip and chair. However, with only managers, nothing gets done? Yet workers alone can accomplish any task. Where did this notion come from that managers cannot also work. I realize this is not everywhere, but is the case in many of the places I have been. One exception is the oil field, where in my experience everyone worked.

I wonder if the first managers weren't the relatives of the owners?

SSA, wow so many things to worry about. We sat down with someone from the Social Security Administration about 6 months prior to my retirement at 62. Terry had retired already retired the day she turned 56. After the SSA meeting we sat with the Edward Jones retirement planner in her office. We both decided after advice 62 was good for us to collect. Now as I approach 70 I need to think about 401k withdrawals at 72. It never hurts to sit down with professionals if they are not product pushers.

Everyone’s needs are different so ask around

Likely his position was that although no remote yardmaster was directly involved the company could use remote yardmaster if they wanted to instead of using employees that had other duties.
Correct, but that violated the scope rules of the Mechanical Foreman and the Operating Employees, but that would involve three additional separate cases to progress. Secondly, In order to use a remote yardmaster, either in DC, or NYC, they would have to install remote cameras and other electronics, so that the yard crews could be given their switch lists.

In the long run, it worked out for Amtrak, mainly because the Regular crews were experienced, and worked to make it work, to keep the remaining jobs in the crew base.

Good morning everyone or afternoon or evening depending where you reside in this world.

I apologize for the silence as I am still processing my loss of my baby sister. We had the wake on Friday evening on September 9th and then the funeral on Saturday the September 10th. One day be for the 11th when my mother lost her sister to 9/11, my Aunt Barbara.

I ended up doing the eulogy for my sister. I chose to do this as no one else in my family could do it nor did I trust anyone else to do it. The eulogy lasted about between 7 and 10 minutes. I think everyone appreciated it. It went well even though it was difficult to contain some of my emotions.

As the days go by and I move forward in life I am reminded of my sister and that my family has suffered an unspeakable loss. I know life goes on. I have yet to truly grieve but currently I am holding a lot of emotions inside. I am dealing with her estate and tending to her 3 boys she left behind and making sure we cover all aspects of the estate. The oldest boy goes back to Nova Scotia tomorrow to college at St. Francis Xavier University for his Masters. The middle boy left yesterday to go back to Champlain University up at Plattsburgh NY. He graduates in December with his bachelors degree in creative advertising and marketing of some sorts, not sure of the specifics. The youngest, a Marine leaves Friday back to base in San Diego CA.

My last and remaining sibling, older sister leaves to go back to the UK on Friday morning. She will be going to the funeral processions for Queen Elizabeth as well. The irony here is my baby sister's name is Elizabeth although she passed on the 30th of August her obituary was posted in the paper the same day Queen Elizabeth passed and hit the front page of the newspapers.

I am left with these words that I used in closing of my sisters eulogy...

"There are some people in life that make you laugh a little louder, smile a little bigger and live just a little better..."

Peace,
James

just another example of how boring some news media here can be.
Worst part beyond the footage, are the inane comments of the clueless Commentators, employed by said media.

Wife was watching the procession past the bier. The morons on CBS were hopelessly lost attempting to explain what we were seeing, without their usual teleprompters. Yet the commentators persist in talking down to the audience. Wife switched to NBC, which was worse. Time for reruns of NBC Dateline, from 10 years ago.

And now the rest of the story.

77° and sunny, with low humidity, after a morning low of 54°. The hot muggy air blew out after Midnight. The heavy rain never materialized. Next three days will be fantastic. I start a round of Physical Therapy for my back on Friday. Looking forward to it.

Willie: Great photos of the aircraft. The only thing better than a museum is an air show. Best one I ever saw was at NAS Pensacola. The B-52 is awesome. There are squadrons of them still flying.

Social Security? Other than going to an office for a replacement card. The only employer I had under SS, was the Army, and That was only 6 years of my life. The Fire Department back in the 70s, was strictly a Municipal pension system, for Retirement benefit, and healthcare. I didn't stay there long enough to become vested. The 42 years of the Railroad Retirement System was a blessing I never anticipated until I started collecting. The payroll tax was higher than SS, and we did pay into Medicare. But we are eligible for full retirement at age 60. I was getting to the point, where I could no longer put up with the daily grind. I doubt I would have made it to 66 or what ever my Full SS year was. The wife had to wait 3½ years for her share, but they applied credits for her SS quarters. My 401(k), kept us solvent during that 3½ year period, although it was decimated by the great Goldman Sachs Recession of 2008-2010. (My timing is always wrong). Hindsight says I should have kept working until 62 or perhaps 65, but working 11 to 12 hours per day, in addition to a 90" multi-mode commute each way was wearing thin. RR has it's own quirks, but is a great system, if you can live long enough to collect.

Finished the Steroid this morning. Maybe I'll sleep better tonight.

House news. Originally I was told that the gravel guys with their gravel slingers were going to be there yesterday. With one that needs to be fed externally as that was the only one they had on short notice. But they did not show as not every player that needed to be involved could show up. Of course they didn't tell me that. But last night I was told that one of their other jobs finished up early with the truck mounted slinger and they would be there this morning at 8am. They were in fact there at 7:40am. Unfortunately their gravel was really dusty and caused a mess and problems with neighbors. I talked to the company scheduler/boss as did a neighbor. The workers also said it was hard to see enough to shoot it correctly. Luckily later loads have been clean and no dust to speak of.

They're up there now and I am headed back shortly to watch.

First two pics are the start wth dirty gravel. Last pic with the guy with yellow headgear shows cleaner stuff. I have not been there since the later, cleaner loads showed up. Plumber guy sent me that pic.
