Good Morning All. Clear, calm and 64° here. Windows are all open. Pool is still a respectable 83° which should last a few more days. From my experience, the day length and sunlight angle are no longer conducive to the thing heating up after 9-15, and too much heat is lost overnight. I have a new water dam to try this year so I don't have to drain 25% of the water to keep it out of the plumbing and pump/filter system; where it is subject to freezing during really cold spells. Should reduce the 3500 gallons or so that I have to add back in the spring.
I don't know what channel my wife was watching on TV earlier this week, but it was a continual helicopter shot of the Queen's hearse driving through the countryside, I think it was still in Scotland. It reminded me of the 90's when we got to watch the OJ Simpson car chase in it's entirety! And this is not a comment on the importance of the Queen herself, but just another example of how boring some news media here can be.
I spent much of my morning mowing the final part of the yard. All is now complete for a few days.
Then my wife and I reviewed the retirement accounts in preparation for a consultation this afternoon with the new financial services advisor. It took T Rowe Price two months to transfer my inherited accounts over to my current financial server; they just didn't want to let it go. With inherited accounts, one must start taking an RMD, and since one of my accounts that I inherited from my brother was already one that he had inherited from my late father and was taking a distribution from, I need information. The information that we obtained from the IRS is as confusing as any other info from them. Since we don't take regular distributions from any of our other retirement accounts, this is new to us and will most likely require us to pay considerably more in federal income taxes, we need to get it right. As it stands now, I have no tax liability for 2022 because we have been supplementing SS with a draw down of our excessive saving and money market accounts.
We had a great anniversary celebration meal at a real nice eatery in the Dallas suburb of Addison last night. It is less than a half mile from Discount Model Railroads which we visited before going for our meal. The place was packed and I can see why it is reservation only. I had a 16 oz rib eye steak (very medium rare) and my wife had
Carne Asada, which is a Mexican style skirt steak. Excellent food which was served with
Yorkshire Pudding instead of the usual bread. I couldn't see the steak on the plate when it was served as it was covered with an enormous mountain of sauteed mushrooms. The place was pricey as I noted yesterday, after I added the gratuity, the bill was $200 for the two of us. I had asked the waitress to take our picture, dropping the hint that it was our 50th anniversary, hoping for a complimentary dessert or something. Instead, just as we were standing up to leave, the manager came over and handed us a gift card worth $40!!! That took some of the sting out of the original bill, but it means making the 130 mile round trip again at some point. Well, the train store is nearby and so are both of my daughters and three grandkids. There are other things on the menu that caught my eye.
Thanks for the ongoing likes for the pictures from Will Rogers Gardens, and I assume my sometimes lengthy posts;

No train shed yesterday, as we left for Dallas in the early afternoon. I did drop $440 at the train store, I hadn't been there in over four months. All supplies and detail parts including re-stocking some styrene shapes, DPM walls, and paints. Got about two dozen figures and a few vehicles. I'll unpack today and take a few pictures as well as post on the RPO thread.
The last stop that we made on our OKC road trip Friday was at the Air Park on the grounds of Tinker AFB. All planes are static, all have fake covers on the engine intakes and all had their windshields papered and taped like at an auto paint shop. But it was still interesting. It mostly featured aircraft that were either built at or served at Tinker over the years. It is still an active AFB, but visitors are not allowed inside near the real planes.
Here's a C-47.

That statue is one of the Tuskegee Airmen who were connected with this base somehow.
Then an EA-68.

A C-135 was next to that. This one was used to transport government documents around.

It's interesting because when I used to see them flying overhead in the 80's - early 90's they seemed a lot bigger than when sitting on the ground.
I have more that I need to sort out, hopefully in a day or two. I hope that you enjoy part of our nation's history.
Todd - While we haven't had to do any "forcing" with the SSA ourselves, my wife had to do so regularly for her clients when she worked at H&R Block. In some cases, they eventually get caught up on their own and then pay interest on the difference.
Ken here on the forum posted about his experience "forcing" them in post #626. They need to use that $87B and get a new computer system. Here's a link to a report from the General Accounting Office from less than a year ago.

Dave B - It can be complicated to decide when to start SS depending on a lot of other circumstances and individual preferences. My "full retirement age" according to them was 66. My wife started drawing hers two years ahead of me since she is older. I could wait the three years from retirement to start the payments because besides her SS, she was still working four months a year at H&R Block, drawing unemployment during the summer and I was using the RMD from the inherited IRA that I received from Dad. I could have waited longer but the trade-off between the higher future monthly payments, for me, was not as good as leaving money in the retirement accounts. I had also finally exhausted the inherited IRA as well and no longe had RMD's. Every case will be different. And yes to others who wonder if your payments go up if you keep working even though you are already getting a check. Hers went up annually based on the income every year for te five years that she worked after first drawing the benefit. Some years we did have to pay federal income tax on the unemployment.
Lonnie Donegan - What a treat. He was a lot more famous in Great Britain than here.
Guy - I always wired up segments of the layout as I built them in order to run trains. Initially it was going back and forth for 15' until more was built. I was particularly itchy since I had dismantled the old layout 2 years earlier.
Everybody have a great day. Hope to see you over on Western Wednesday later.
