Speaking of grilling and food.

Pork chop was for tonight

The sausages were smoking, I'll add them to the crockpot tomorrow, along with peppers, onion, tomatoes etc, and we'll have pasta added to the mix later in the day.

Computer-wise, back on track. Took most of the day, but I'm on track.

Well, the Astros eked out another win, now the division winner.
When the Astros came to Baltimore back in August, I had a feeling they would win the Western Division. They looked too good to be denied. The Astros may not have the best record in the American league, but I hope they get knocked out of the playoffs before the Orioles have to face them! 😛

Congratulations to the Astros, their fans and most of all Dusty Baker! Dusty is the grand old man of baseball, a true class act. A crafty old... too!

Good night, Everybody!

I don't know what Carnitas are, but they sound good.
Carnitas are just tacos made with Mexican seasoned pork butt that has been cubed, dry marinaded overnight, seared and put in the crock pot on low for 6-8 hours. I serve mine with Verde salsa, Monterrey Jack cheese, sour cream and black olives as toppings. Mucho delicioso. That's Spanish for very delicious. I described the dry marinade in the original post. A variation would be to add chopped onion to the crock pot.

Good evening fellow diners, those with puter problems and those celebrating anniversaries!

Been a busy weekend! New furniture in the living room on Friday, which translates into a dump run Saturday. After loading the trailer and hooking it up, found only 1 working taillight. Made the dump run anyway, and passed a few cops along the way. I dodged that bullet. Son #1 Decided to stay the day with the old man(me) so that was a blessing, as the 2 of us rewired the lights on the trailer. It seems the cheap "made in China" wiring harness that came with the LED lighting kit was not up to the task. Very weak metal core that was easily broken by hand. Off it all came and was replaced by a kit from Reese.
Then came the new puppy! Yes it's been a year since Bud passed and the whole time I've been searching for a new pup to replace him, but finally realizing that it was futile, I'd never replace Bud. So I just figured out in time I'd find Bailey a companion someday, when I wasn't looking.
Stella.jpg

Meet Stella! The rescue group called me Friday night and asked if I was interested and I said yes, so they brought her out Saturday! She's 5 months old, partially potty trained and she LOVES her big sister Bailey. She came from a rescue in Puerto Rico to a rescue based in Ellicott City MD. She seems to be some kind of small terrier mix, but she is an absolute cutie cuddle bug! Bailey has been a great big sister and she follows her everywhere and mimicks her movements. When Bailey goes potty, She goes potty.
Needless to say Saturday night a trip to the store for puppy toys, food and treats. Sunday was fence modifications, the lawn, then Nascar . I just now made it to the basement abode, after painting 2 flower pots for you know who!

The cat (who is bigger than her), Is not amused. Oh well, he'll get over it!

Hopefully I will be able to get back to the layout this week, I need to install the 3 bridges I built on the layout and get piers placed.
Mike and David: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Ditto here, and congrats to the sainted females involved!

Curt, the REA building is most awesome!!

Cya all tomorrow

Good evening. Beautiful day today with a high of 74...Spent a good part of the afternoon in the trainroom, working on details. Y'all make me hungry with all that good looking food. Looks like a food run and prescription pick-up on Monday. Also have to mail the sewer bill.

How 'bout dem Baltimore Orioles. 101 wins, best in the American League. Meanwhile, on Sunday Night Football, the KC Chiefs are putting a whoopin on the Gotham Jets.. 17 - 5 in the 2nd.

Small example of my efforts on the layout:
Tilghman Street Crossing 10-01-2023- JSW Photo.jpg

Spent a good part of the day working on the Tilghman Street grade crossing. The PRR side is almost done. The Reading tracks get paved tomorrow, then the rest of the signage is installed and the crossing is opened after 5 years or dormancy. The Chester & Delaware River is a slow motion line, and nothing is ever ready before its time.

Karl: The pup, she's a little cutie! Good Luck with her.

Have a good evening, and a safe week.

We went to my mom's today for supper. Afterwards, before we left, she took me and my son out in the backyard, our womenfolk having already left (yes we had two cars as my son came from a different place he'd been at today). She has a pumpkin growing in a tree. She had two of them, but one was lower down and she cut the stem and got it out of the tree. In a week or three we'll be back to help her get this one out of the tree..

It seems the vine grew up the tree and had its children perched up in the tree.

These two pics show it from the lawn and an up close pic.

I'd never replace Bud.
I agree, we can never replace them. We can honor them by providing a loving home to a pup in need. Before you know it, they warm their way into your heart, and you have an addition to the family in every sense. Cats, they take a little longer to get use to changes.

The pork chop was tasty too
I bet it was and the sausage sounded like it was going to make an even better meal! I only meant they were not yet fully cooked. Well done, that is.

What kind of sausage were they? I hope I did not miss it if you already said so.

Good morning, it's 72 and clear.
My family and friends have suggested I find another dog, or even a cat, so I'm not completely by myself. While I wouldn't mind a 4-legged companion, I don't think it would be doing the pet any favors by locking them up either in this trailer or a crate for 9 hours a day while I'm off at work.

I agree with you, I don’t like having the pets alone all day either, we always had at least two animals at a time.

Really feeling like crap tonight, thinking back on things I used to be able to do back in the day, but which are long lost:

I could play pickup basketball at a pretty high level (back then anyway). But what even average court players can do now, I couldn't even touch these days. Except maybe from outside.

I regularly matched up head-to-head* against a guy who went on to play twelve years in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks as a rebounder/power forward. I only recently realized he had four inches on me back then, but I feel today we were pretty evenly matched--I have real knuckle-dragger long arms, and I was a good shot-blocker. Too lightweight to match him up inside though.

Still, enough well matched that I figure he owes me a decent kickback for helping make him the player he eventually became. I'll talk to his lawyer about it...or not.

[* The tallest match up against tallest, as a rule, unless it's obvious one of them just can't measure up to the other due to mismatched skills.]

---------------

I didn't play against him more than a handful of times, but I also went up against the then NCAA "steals leader." We two were both evenly matched in height this time at 6' 4"--he was a guard.

First time we are starting out together head-up from half court: Top of the key and I bounce him the ball to open, he short passes it to the guy on his left--maybe a pass all of twelve inches--and before I realize I've just been had and react back the other way he's streaked around my left, angled back in toward the basket and snags the pass above the rim. SLAM! Maybe three seconds in...not two...not four...and he's just "Coop-de-Loop" dunked on me. Ala the LA Lakers and the Magic Johnson to Michael Cooper pass-and-slam dunk.

"OK, so that's how it's gonna be. Got it," I said to myself.

But just like the Johnson, Cooper and the Lakers, this guy and his friends always looped him--the slammer--around to their right with that pass up above the rim. And my own personal pat-on-the-back to myself is that they never pulled it off a second time. I saw it coming every time, and stopped it every time. Without goal-tending. In fact, as many times as they tried it after that, he never touched that above the rim-pass even a second time--I tipped it away every time thereafter.

I attribute this much more to the inability of the passer to put the ball in the right spot for the potential but-never-again-realized slam dunk than I do to him, as he never even touched the ball until it came back off my block...but it still takes two to tango, and I kept 'em from dancin' together again as a pair even a second time. And he was the critical part of the timing of the play, so I still feel pretty good about it all these years later.

After a few more tries they gave it up completely. Still like that too.

This guy went on to play briefly for the Phoenix Suns, but was caught up in the "Walter Davis Cocaine Scandal," and never played in the NBA again.

------------------

Then there's the time I got body slammed. :D

Playing shirt's and skins as usual, but there is a gal with us. She's tall too. Can't remember if we ever matched up, but she was a star from Iowa as I recall, and led her team at CU Boulder.

So I'm givin' her the business...the unrestriced elbows, both of us (she was new and we weren't taking it easy on her, as she came to play with the big boys)...and after a week or so of the inside play, she had finally had enough. So we both go up for a rebound and she SLAMS me on my back. Dazed and looking up at the spinning ceiling.

She leans over, looks straight down at me and says, with a big smile on her face: "It's a tough game, isn't it?" :D

Uh...yeah.

I asked her if she remembered it many years later, and she didn't, but since she played pro ball for seven years in Europe, I'm hardly surprised. :D

One more, but in another post.

One pack of Sweet Italian, and one of Mild Italian. (I can't handle hot spice with my acid reflux)

That reminds me that I need to go take them out of the freezer. They slice easier when they're mostly frozen.

Good morning all. After a frosty start to the day it is now rather cloudy.
Baked a pudding as a trial for Christmas. Rather a success if I say so myself. I doubt it will last the week. 🤣
Did a bit of a clear out of unneccessary stuff in the train room. Stuff that 'might come in handy', but no it will not.

A busy time at Clarence Dock.
(Just beyond the locomotive and carriages is all backscene.)
