Well, howdy there internet people, those who know what Clifton Strength are

It's Troy again, and I'm a #1 adapter.

Yep. I've been diving into personality types lately. Seems that in the publishing world, the gold rush days for the Indy publishing sphere are over. I knew that over a year ago, when I noticed how many successful authors were getting into selling picks and shovels and mules and the latest greatest way to may $$$$ writing.

That's usually the first sign that you're into late adopters phase.

And there's such a business that was actually started at the tail end of the "gold rush". The person behind it had been trained as a business coach with the Clifton Strengths by Gallup. I've done DISC personality profiles (mildly ok), the Meyers Briggs Entegram ones, (confusing to me, Im an INFP - but borderline on several of those classifications).

I sat in a presentation by the coach in question and was blown away. She started with "all of these coaches/mentors will say This may not work for everyone. But can't tell you why. Well, I can tell you why it won't work for YOU!"

So my 6 week deep dive into this has borne fruit. I actually found a test that highlights the "strengths" of my personality. And the descriptors aren't like a horror-scope that is so generic it could apply to any situation.

Anyway, here's my grid of strengths. Bold ones are my top-10. Anything below that is either supporting the others, or actively fighting against them.
Screen Shot 2022-10-30 at 9.04.43 AM.png

I joked with the online community that my #34 (lowest potential to affect me) is what the highly successful people have by far in their top 10. Yep. I'm a #34 Achiever.

I'm middle to low in all of the Purple strengths. Those are the Git'R'Done strengths.

I complained to one of the coaches that I spend too much time chasing squirrels like that dog from UP! (the disney/pixar movie). Or noticing something Shiny and going off to investigate it.

After looking at my top ten, most in the Strategic/Learning/Idea Green Zone, and backed up with the Blue strengths for processing and building on ideas, they agreed I can succeed but need to have ways to focus.

We're calling this the Shiny Squirrel combo of talents.

So, I've been up since 4:30, and have most of a chapter written. Because I turned off the shiny squirrels of social media. Only a brief look at emails and FB while I ate my breakfast. Finished eating before I got to MRR Forum. So nose to the grindstone and get to writing.

These books don't write themselves, especially when there are shiny squirrels to chase.

Good morning from sunny east central Minnesota, 34 and some dissipating mist over the meadow...

Flo - just coffee this morning, I will be leading the singing at Church this morning and don't want my throat all gunked up

Notifications: I get the stupid McAffee notification every time I log in, their text is so confusing I am sure there are many people that sign up without knowing it, do I press OK? I do not want another monthly charge and there is a free virus app that comes with the computer, however they would like me to forget about that. Never had a virus, do not do surfing from my home computer, reserve that for the workplace where they have professionals

Log in - I have had lots of goofy stuff with this. And since I am a late adopter it mostly is Greek. The dam- computer works now don't wreck it keep fingers and toes crossed

Since it was sooooo nice yesterday ended up getting very little done on the layout, got the work area cleaned up and organized a ton of stuff, took an hour but not much to see

IMG_2783r.JPG

Spread out some of my painting projects so I can set some priorities. Still some people missing

IMG_2785r.JPG

Got this old John Deere B touched up, was really bugging me that some of the yellow around the wheels was bad

Also got these trees ready to plant, Wife helped pick out a couple good locations:

These are all roots from shrubs, will put them together and add foliage try to make 3 big trees.

For a total of 10 hours of show time over two days, I sold enough vehicles and pipe loads to pay for the table, my gas back and forth, and a total profit of $5.00.
Attendance was off this year and most vendors barely covered expenses.
With the economy worrying about inflation, most people were only buying what they had budgeted to buy.
I will have to reconsider going to the next train show as a vendor.
Looks like it is not worth it, a shame as nice goods from cottage industries are not easy to come by. but you could clearly have used those 2 days more productively, making more goods, to sell remotely, plus you do not mention food, drink, risk of stealing, wear on tyres, mileage on vehicle, sd.

Good Morning All. Clear and 53° this morning. It will be good to see the sun today after 2 1/2 days of overcast and rain.. Didn't rain yesterday, but the promised partly sunny didn't happen. If our forecast is to be believed, we'll be in the low to mid 70's for the next ten days. My kind of weather.

I'm home alone right now, as my wife took a trip to see the daughter #2's in-laws who came from South Jersey to get away from, well, South Jersey. She is also going to a couple of different Halloween events with various grandkids, and it is also both of my SIL's birthdays this past week. I'm just not the social animal that I once was and I spent the last two weekends away from home! I will surprise her by re-arranging the living room furniture without her being in the way.

Thanks for the likes on my current project.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I did some painting on the diner. Unfortunately my 10 year old bottle of Polly S Stainless Steel paint was totally hard and useless.
IMG_2305.JPG

So I tried some different paint that is similar in color but I am not happy with it.
IMG_2306.JPG

The unpainted area around the front door is glue surfaces for the vestibule. I will try some Testor's silver enamel next. That bottle is 18 years old, but I used it on the ventilator on the rear of the diner's kitchen here.
IMG_2307.JPG

The concrete blocks on the kitchen are painted with Aged Concrete, I don't remember the maker. I am disappointed in City Classics molding process. The blocks on the left side don't line up correctly with the blocks on the rear wall even though the bottom of the two walls meet. However this is going to be out of view so it may not matter.

Tom O - Hurray for your granddaughter for finding the ruler. Eyes closer to the layout must have helped.
Mikey - At least you made some $$$. Hopefully you had a good time.
Jaz - I can relate to you as I am only 5'4" myself. I don't own any heels, so that's it. We once had a 4" ice storm here years ago and I was amazed at new perspective it gave me when walking around outside.
They look the dog doo dahs when dolled up. especially as her boots are thigh high!
Pictures???;)
Terry - I absolutely hate the two factor authentication process. I don't keep any personal or financial records on my computer, and I don't do online banking so I don't think that I need it. Actually I do have access to my IRA's on there, but they are set up for phone only changes with Prudential.

Today is Grace Slick's 83rd birthday. What a great voice she had in her heyday. Henry Winkler is 77 and Ivanka Trump is 41.
Everyone have a great Sunday.

Having a somewhat "iffy" day, could not get to sleep last night, finally around 4am I went off, woke up at 10.21, or 11.21 as we put our clocks back early am.
Found out something I eat last night did not agree with me at all, so not going to the RR show, staying close to home I think

On the flip side it means I can get on with another structure, it's the MDF two storey goods shed, already painted, so just need to build it and add the various items (and the obligatory lighting) I have for it.

I've found the security code for the car radio, 🥳 I'd hidden it inside the wallet I use for my disabled badge, amazing what you find when you stop looking for it, so I'm going to take today as a win. :)

That's the direction that a lot of software is going. Ya have to pay a subscription fee to use it on a periodic basis. On top of that, you're operating system software updates will lock out the use of legacy software so it won't even start. Either pay the fee or regress to pencil and paper.
Ya might think you'll just pull out the old typewriter, but good luck in replacing the dried out ink ribbon.
As someone who uses 2 A4 page to a day diaries every year, plus note books to record what I am doing

researching bigger purchases,
monitoring pensions - eeek freaks out!

I do like my computer for research but am regularly annoyed with the likes of Amazon who neither categorise correctly and often misspell products, atm I want a fire proof ‘ heat resistant hearth rug for the new woodburning stoves, the seller says lovely things, massive feed back says ooh yes wonderful, but you read the w star reviews and find out the rugs are shite do not lay flat, catch fire the first time an ember breathes on it, the Amazon choice and ‘top’ sellers who paid are often the worst offenders. I plan to find one somewhere check it out THEN buy 3 more, but at present am not impressed. liars cheats etc abound on the internet.

IF the internet ever went down I would really miss places like this, but as someone who rembers pre internet I would not go into melt down.

We now have 3 of the woodburners working, one needs a delivery next week to finish it, I need to do a bit of decorating and add some more tiles, but today I am happy. IF there is blackouts, we now have bought wood, our own wood, and off grid heat cooking and some backlighting.

I think they were disappointed to not get a tioo, but I’ll tip when the whole job is finished which is hopefully end of next week.
meantime Kitchen, needs edging strip and considering extra tiles to wall front

I have first coat painted white, will need at least 2 more coats, the item above holds a TV which cannot be put back until I find a mantle I wanted the stove in place then choose

lounge, a flat back wall, which I plan to tile, am liking the kitchen tiles so much and have about 10 left that I think I’ll get a few more and repeat here

Sounds like the party is at Willie's Place!!!!! LOL Watch what you change, as I did that one and she wanted it different, so I ended up moving stuff twice!

Fell asleep after breakfast this morning which was earlier than most Sunday mornings. Just feel tired all the time, worse since 'vid. Since I ran the fertilizer on Friday, yes my helper assisted, I restarted the sprinkler system. First time I've ever done that. Only takes about 20 minutes to shut it down, so.... There's that job to do again. We're not expecting any freezing temps the next 10 days, so I have some time.

Wasn't feeling good yesterday so no trains, but it is still on my list.

Good evening. It's cloudy and 60.
A few days ago, for my sins, I managed to be gifted an Apple computer.
After a few days of using it, I'm remembering why I stepped away from these machines.
While it technically works okay, I keep getting a nag every five minutes or so, demanding I upgrade my account security.
Since I was nearly forced to throw a perfectly good almost new iMac in the trash when my wife died because of two factor authentication, I refuse to willingly subject myself to that process again.
And therein seems to lie the problem. Every five minutes, there is a big red notification of a problem with my computer. The problem is, I haven't enabled two factor authentication on this device. I have to log in, enter my password--twice--, then click "other options", then click "don't upgrade security", then repeat a second time, then I can close the notification.
Five minutes later, the notification is back.
I think I'll turn off the computer, unplug it, and put it in a drawer until I'm feeling masochistic.
Terry: This is for a home computer that you are sitting at? I guess I can understand multiple authentication actions for trying to get into a work computer. I am running W10 for my desktop in the house. If that EVER goes to something like that it will be reload with Fedora Workstation and Micro$soft can kiss my ... Amazing!

If it was not "free", I wouldn't have it. The laptop itself is okay, very clean and lightly used. Apple has been slowly implementing more and more restrictions in the name of "security" over the past couple of years or so. They also want you to use their cloud for everything in your life. My take on this is, if you as a company want to make these things available for me to purchase, fine. If I do purchase/use their service, I expect it to be as close to perfect as possible, and the company should be responsible for any trouble. I should also have the option to not use these services, knowing if I don't, I have no recourse. This is being forced down my throat, and if something happens to my stuff or data, their response is "sorry you had a problem. Would you like to sign up for more of our services"?

Dave: McAffee has been bugging me as I'm down to 13 days before expiration. I have no intention of using McAffee after it expires, so I will delete all McAffee software, and make sure Microsoft's built in protections are activated.

Be prepared for a barrage of McAfee E-mails if you let it expire. Even if you send them to Spam, they keep coming because apparently they use 1,000's of addresses. It took me over a year to finally rid them from coming.

Boris: I have NEVER loaded an AV program on any of the computers in our house. Never. That has been since Windows 286 in the late 80's. I guess that I have taught everybody here to not open any links in eMail when they do not know the sender. Same for anything on the web they happen to run across.

If I were to add some sort of AV, it would be PCMatic as it is the only one AFIK that is USofA based. All the others are 3rd world companies which in my opinion is ...um... pretty much hanging your butt out there. PCMatic now is $50 a year for up to 10 devices which is pretty cheap. Micro$oft protection is automatic as long as you 'turn it on'. I have no idea of what it does or how it protects me as I have never seen any sort of pop up message saying it did or found some problem. If an AV program gives you that 'warm and fuzzy feeling', so be it.

With Linux workstations, I don't worry about any of the above. As long as you are not running as 'root', the system can not be compromised. Sure, something could happen running as you, although you don't see that for the most part either. Easy fix, delete the user account, and all files then add the user account again.

PCMatic just started with Linux servers which have about 80% of the market share. That is probably because they are safe and secure. Played with Window$ NT years ago and found that it had holes in it even when it was patched to the max for security. So I skipped the whole Micro$soft game with servers. Been doing Linux servers since 1995 ( started with Redhat 5.2 I think ) and see no reason to stop.

The World Series looks like a real battle. I love baseball!

I have not used Antivirus software since Comcast stopped offering Norton's for free. Windows Defender and regular updates.

Two step verification: PIA. I say no whenever I can. If I must, I use a text message for the second step.

BGE (Baltimore Gas & Electric) is the only one I can think of that uses Two step verification in my world.

Ya, one of the good things when you run your own mail server - I can do aliases for the domains that I control. For instance I would do McA@ what ever domain I wanted. Then when they pissed me off, I would remove that alias and all the emails would bounce at the server. Note that I still see eMail attempts in the mail logs for a user that I got rid of 15 years ago! Most of the time the people that are sending figure out that the eMail is not valid and take it off the list.

Afternoon All,

Had a wonderful field trip yesterday to 2 Incredible modelers in the Ormond Beach area. The first modeler has a logging type railroad with superb scenery. The second modeler had 2 HO layouts (one UP and the other NYC/New Haven) and a room filled with dioramas centered around high end building kits like FSM and SRMW. He had these dioramas in glass cases which were merchandise display cases. When I walked in and saw them I said Holy S***.

TomO- Very nice job on the background building flat.

Hughie- Great looking progress.

NorthBrit- Nice scenes.

George- Check the LRT website. That's where I got mine.

Dave- Nice looking trailer. Does it represent the 20's-30's JD?

Willie- Any thoughts with what you're going to do on the building front?

Smudge- I hope you feel better. I think a Guinness would cure what ails you! :) I know it cures my ails.

Jaz- It sounds like you are ready at home. Is that a set of rabbit ears in the last photo or something else?

A couple dioramas
