Snarky Old Fart (in training)
Well, howdy there internet people, those who know what Clifton Strength are
It's Troy again, and I'm a #1 adapter.
Yep. I've been diving into personality types lately. Seems that in the publishing world, the gold rush days for the Indy publishing sphere are over. I knew that over a year ago, when I noticed how many successful authors were getting into selling picks and shovels and mules and the latest greatest way to may $$$$ writing.
That's usually the first sign that you're into late adopters phase.
And there's such a business that was actually started at the tail end of the "gold rush". The person behind it had been trained as a business coach with the Clifton Strengths by Gallup. I've done DISC personality profiles (mildly ok), the Meyers Briggs Entegram ones, (confusing to me, Im an INFP - but borderline on several of those classifications).
I sat in a presentation by the coach in question and was blown away. She started with "all of these coaches/mentors will say This may not work for everyone. But can't tell you why. Well, I can tell you why it won't work for YOU!"
So my 6 week deep dive into this has borne fruit. I actually found a test that highlights the "strengths" of my personality. And the descriptors aren't like a horror-scope that is so generic it could apply to any situation.
Anyway, here's my grid of strengths. Bold ones are my top-10. Anything below that is either supporting the others, or actively fighting against them.
I joked with the online community that my #34 (lowest potential to affect me) is what the highly successful people have by far in their top 10. Yep. I'm a #34 Achiever.
I'm middle to low in all of the Purple strengths. Those are the Git'R'Done strengths.
I complained to one of the coaches that I spend too much time chasing squirrels like that dog from UP! (the disney/pixar movie). Or noticing something Shiny and going off to investigate it.
After looking at my top ten, most in the Strategic/Learning/Idea Green Zone, and backed up with the Blue strengths for processing and building on ideas, they agreed I can succeed but need to have ways to focus.
We're calling this the Shiny Squirrel combo of talents.
So, I've been up since 4:30, and have most of a chapter written. Because I turned off the shiny squirrels of social media. Only a brief look at emails and FB while I ate my breakfast. Finished eating before I got to MRR Forum. So nose to the grindstone and get to writing.
These books don't write themselves, especially when there are shiny squirrels to chase.
