Good evening. 43°F and clear. Spent much of the day reading Railroad magazines, and running errands. Spent the evening watching Hockey. Detroit beat Montreal 3-0.
  • Soccer? I don't understand the attraction.
  • Metric measurement, why? Jimmy Carter tried to force that on us in the late 70s. Obviously, he failed.
For what it's worth, I think Mara is pulling our leg.... ;) had an Army buddy, from Belfast, who always did the same thing...

Spoke with my son in Korea, he's all settled in after orientation. Quarters are close to main Exchange and stuff, but a distance from work area.

My Mom had another heart attack. She is now in hospice care at the hospital.
Her request is to come to our house for in-home hospice care. We don't know how we will do it but do it we will.
My Mom will have her last request granted.
I've done in-home hospice myself (dad), and anticipate doing it again one more time (for my own mom). There will hopefully be help from hospice people who may sometimes do "house calls," I hope there will not be much if any pain for your mom.
In dad's case he suffered COPD, and the local hospital simply would not release him unless he met a certain relatively low standard for blood-oxygen. This surprised me, particularly as the ICU could administer, at most, just just 15 PSI of additional oxygen, and it was only borderline enough to make the grade. Even then they only let him go after he signed the "I accept that I might suffer organ failure at any time" clause in the release form. Talk about covering their collective a$$es....
As it turned out, in-home hospice was allowed to administer as much oxygen as was needed--four heavy tanks every couple of days, running about 30 PSI in the last day or two.
The other, very helpful thing (the traveling nurses monitored the levels very carefully, to make sure no one else was using it too) was anxiety meds, and eventually morphine for just that purpose. Dad (he had been a Marine First Lieutenant back in Korea) was reluctant to use morphine at first--"morphine is what they give you on a battlefield before you die"--but he finally relented, and it did help keep him calm.
That was administered with a syringe. No need to worry about air-bubbles, just draw it in and then drip it into his mouth below the tongue. Every twelve hours, as I recall it.
Of all of it, the worst was dealing with the commode--well, so what. He required help on and off, and cleaning his backside up afterward was only a small chore--the bigger problem was being available when he needed it done. But things settled down fairly quickly to a daily schedule, so it all worked out as well as could be expected I guess.

I hope your family can find ways to back each other up and cover all the bases for each 24 hour period. If you have even three bodies, it can make it a lot easier (roughly eight hours on call) vs. just two (as with us). If it's just you, then you will need to make major adjustments to your own schedule (particularly work schedule), and even then, it's going to be stressful. There is the real problem if going solo: "caring for the care-givers," and if it goes on for many months, that may prove to be your biggest hurdle. But you have to have some time for just yourself, else it can drive you mad with worry that you will slip up, Yet it can also have such an effect on you that you can feel utterly claustrophobic. Closed in by it all. That's a real problem.

Any in-home meal deliveries you can get will also be a help, and there won't be a real need to watch diets or salt or anything much else, as it's already the end game. I would favor getting for your mom anything she wants, provided you can afford it. Make this last time as happy as it can be for her.

Best of luck to you in this sad time. I'm sure you WILL handle it. You'll surprise yourself/yourselves.

I think that is why Mom got interested in American football, Dad liked watching the girls and Mom the muscled guys...

My wife is very jealous I cannot look at girls AT ALL, not even a little, would get "that look". Even just talking to any woman and she is nearby I can see the hair raise on the back of her neck, yet she made it a habit to banter with the guys in the building (when we lived in the cities) but would not give the gals the time of day.

Believe me, and I tell her, the last thing I want in this world is an affair, and the honest truth, I cannot handle the woman I have WHY would I want another one? The emotional baggage would be literally staggering!
I left the dentist office and went for the groceries. Purchased only from the list made by the wife except for a bag of M&M’s for $11.48 for the train room.

Gas today is $3.79 for regular down from $4.39 on 10/4 when I last got gas locally per the credit card logs. Premium is at $3.99 which is the lowest since early September. Didn’t need either though today as every tank is at least 3/4’s full. Soda is crazy. Diet Dr Pepper in 16.9 oz bottles today was $4.99 a six pack. Tuesday it was $10.00 for 4 six pack minimums.

Cleaned the bench off for some weathering after lunch. Now I am waiting for the 11:40 lunch meeting. My 2 PM meeting with the attorneys has been moved to Monday, time TBA.
M and m, peanut flavour? I do not eat them nowadays but yum yum

She was in therapy for many years due to childhood abuse issues (TMI?) reached "therapy overload" and insisted I go. That is where I was diagnosed with PTSD also woke me up to what I was putting up with. We are both broken so probably a good match, we have been married 28 years.

I thought it was normal not to talk in the family, never had a conversation with Mom or Dad, built up a "bit" of resentment. Family of 7. Dad first lieutenant in Occupation then Korea, his children became the troops. I left home at age 18, got kicked out of the family when I was 24. I Still showed up for some stuff but of course things were always awkward.
I personally have a slightly jealous other half, and I also check out women who do have a habit of being over nice but he is oblivious to them

. One cheeky cow actually said she wanted him - luckily not in front of him, but - but I could clearly see she was not on his radar so ignored her.

I also had one of his exs come up to me in a night club with her mate and say she wanted him back, and I laughed in her face and said good luck with that, I told him about the incident and he was like yuck they had broken up years before and her mate was the wife of a friend of his, he never bothered visiting them again - and not because I made a fuss because other than reporting it, I just pulled my man out on the dance floor and showed her where his interests were lol.

It does not worry me I find it flattering that after all these years we still protect what is ours. I have a chatty personality …grins….and he is fine as long as it is obvious we are together. when he moves in and starts cuddling I know he is like enough.

I am sorry about your dysfunctional back grounds, but I think if you managed 28 years you clearly have a working formula, and clearly both deserve someone who cares enough to want to watch out for. yes she sounds like she keeps an eye out for trouble, I personally find it flattering.

Far better imo that she is not the type to be sniffing around elsewhere, or not care what you do. ME? If I find my other half trying to stray I would clobber him’ And in that instance her too LOL.

Do you have this one?

If you like Swiss trains, try these guys.

If you find THIS one err I mean ten :D yum yum

Ding Ding Ding!

Wake up Mel! Coffee time. Oh, wait, some of you are here already! ;)

Having a good weekend so far. Just spent some money on author stuff.

Looks like I'm going to be down in Willie's neck of the plains next June. Got an author's con in Plano Tx the second weekend of June. Not sure if the wife is coming with. But if she does, we'll probably do some sightseeing. Yes, I understand that June in Texas is HOT.

In other news, heading out to Muncie IN (where both David Letterman and I both went to college - albeit a decade apart). Going to get some gaming in.

Getting ready to head to Vegas in less than a month for another author convention. This will probably be my last year at that one.

Time for a tall stack, side of bacon, and some of Francine's coffee.

Back on the solar/alternative energy front... Seems like some folks are thinking ahead.

In a nutshell, they are looking at using a lake and reservoir that are at different elevations, and when solar is generating more than the grid is pulling, use the excess to pump water uphill. When the sun goes down, use gravity and water to power hydro-elect generators and let it run downhill. Basically, a water battery.

Yes, there is some loss of energy running the pumps, but they avoid all of the issues with massive banks of real batteries.

That's actually encouraging. The story goes into more details about the plans.

Good morning from the dark and dreary coldness of So. Central Wisconsin. It’s 33f/.55c feeling like 24/-4.4 with the high maybe being 55/12.7.

Yesterday was a day of surprises. Found out the postal service had the steam engine in their “hold refused” delivery holding area and then was probably lost in the Chicago hub. My delivery guy was great in explaining all the tags, including the insurance paid out tag. Rebuilding of the locomotive was started yesterday.

The meeting was ok with the real estate developer who said the protection clause in our agreement is good enough for them. He would love to buy all the developable property but understands we want to sell the house and he doesn’t want it. He did say the family we are dealing with are “good people”.

The face to face with the Attorneys was cancelled yesterday until Monday. But, at 2pm I got a call from their office asking if I would Zoom at 3:30. Along with Terry on Maui our discussion was held. Still the same hourly fee I was told.

After dinner last night, speaking to the wife we decided we are not going to counter the latest offer on the house and we will go back to the original listing. Our realtor was ok, not thrilled but she knows us well. She also knows unless there’s a war the house will sell and her commission will be nice.

Soccer or European football to those watchers of a mostly IMO unexciting sport for the 8 year old soon to be 9 grandson is at 10AM. 65 miles away and in 15mph winds. I suggested last night at dinner with the daughter’s family they drop the granddaughter off here and we can swim and do other things. I might go to his 2PM game, but doubtful. He has both soccer and hockey games tomorrow. Those I will attend as they are home games.

The NHL was on the TV in the background last night. I have not seen a good goalie performance yet even though a few of the games I had on this week had shutouts. Texting with the son mostly around midnight. He received his Amazon prime days deals. Got a great $550 deal on a MacBook but scored big on a Laptop from Asus for $240 plus $40 more for additional 16gb of ram that he installed last night between text messages. He then was starting to remove the useless windows based software programs of which he said there was many.

I have 1 left of Alcomotive‘s (James) 2 bay covered hoppers to inspect and then send pictures for his approval. My fencing arrived after dinner last night for the transload facility. Beautiful stainless steel etch fencing from Alkem Scale Models. Pictures on that coming this week!

enjoy the day

Morning all,

Not much happening this morning. Made Ham and Cheese omelets for breakfast. Got some additional stuff to get at the grocery store this morning and still have to mow. Aldi's doesn't always have what you want, much like our local Walmart. They won't have it if you need it, but if you don't check, you'd have saved a couple of bucks. Yeah, I rarely go there anymore.

Troy: The water battery idea isn't new. Consumer's Energy in Michigan has one south of Ludington off of Lake Michigan. Has been in operation since the early 70's.

We went to a haunted house last night with our youngest daughter and her friend. Such fun!!!

If you're in Central Ohio, you gotta check out the Haunted Hoochie. It's been a haunted house for like 30 years or something like that.

Today, I'm getting ready to go to a gun show with my God Son.

Then watch Michigan at Penn State, then mow grass.

It's shaping up to be a good weekend!

It is good that you are able to spend this precious time together. Prayers and best wishes for both of you.
Thank you, Boris, it is priceless.

I still work/exercise early in the morning. My Mom would not have it any other way! The first thing she asks me when I walk into her room is "did you work?" I get my work ethic from my Mom. She often worked two or even three jobs when I was growing up.

We will be leaving shortly to see her. We will watch the Saturday western movie together and later baseball.

I wish she could come home with me. She could have come home if she were not having "little spells" as she calls them every night. What she calls spells are actually heart attacks.
